Another Distributor Index Question.....

By the way, rebuilt dizzies her in the USA at places like Autozone sell for about $79 US dollars, or about $100 AU dollars(?).

I got a reman dizzy(90' RENIX) from Advance Auto for $55 and the core, one year warranty. Probably won't be that cheap in Australia though.

I'm probably starting to get annoying, but I have done it all over again from pulling the valve cover, getting TDC, notch to the zero position, lining up the striker on the rotor button to the #1 pin, all leads in the right spot. And have ended up in the same position again. Good idle but bad accelaration with the backfiring.

Will a timing light help with this type of motor?

Hi Audio: When I put a remanned motor into my '91, I had the same problem. It would idle ok, but backfired with gas on the pedal. In my case, it turned out that my dizzy was off by a tooth, AND I had the wires in slightly incorrect order. On my dizzy, I remember that the rotor wasn't exactly at 5:00 like the book said it should be @ #1 TDC. It was slightly off from that.

I would recommend this:

First, double check your firing order, and make sure you have the wires connected to the right plugs, and the right posts on the dizzy cap.

If that doesn't fix the problem, try moving the dizzy shaft one tooth in either direction to see if that fixes it.

I'll bet you it's a simple thing like off a tooth or crossed wires. It's amazing what the computer can do to compensate for a poorly installed dizzy.

But don't worry ... you'll get it fixed and you'll be amazed at how well these 4.0 motors can run.

well a bout of good fortune came my way. in out in out went the dizzy and to cut a long story short, I now have a running 4.0L. Thanks to all you guys for all the advice and instructions I was given they helped a lot. (shame I couldn't put them to use LOL) But the problem were as most of you said a single tooth out and it only took me a dozen or so attempts to get it right.

And the prices you lot quoted above is awsome, $55+ for a Cherokee dizzy where as back here I was looking at $920 from a stealership or $780 from Repco which is one of our main auto parts stores.
Most of the local auto parts stores I rang laughed and pretty much said "good luck mate, we don't stock em, try Crysler" yeah thanks LOL.

Anyway problem solved, cheers guys.
Jay......

What a mark up, sounds like we should consider exporting jeep parts to the down under!

Well now you are an expert on installing Jeep distributors. A dozen attempts is par for the course, thats why we call them dizzies! LOL.

Glad it's up and running.

As a side note, i'm amazed at how many Americans you have referring to a distributor as a dizzy.

LOL, I take it that "dizzy" is not a commonly used term for a distrubutor in the States.
Well thats my attempt at international relations I suppose.

Haha well why take away from the help by changing up the terms for him :) I use dizzy from time to time...just not near as much as Ive used in this thread.

Glad you got it running! Thats crazy how much parts cost you down there. You should get a US connection...unless shipping would be crazy.

It really does sound like you have it one tooth off. I will say I am no expert!
I Just had the pleasure of swaping a '93 HO into my '90 and had to swap distributors as well. This problem really drove me nuts!! Since there is no adjustment it is either off one tooth (runs but wont rev) or perfect or off the other way.
BTW you can hook up a light but since you cant adjust the dizzy what is the point? I tried using the light to figure out which way I was off. My crank mark must have been "firing" under the ac/alt cause I couldnt find the it.
You could have someone else start the jeep with you holding it down and try to rotate it to see which way it needs to go. My oil pump was most of the frustration. I could adjust the dizzy but the damn thing would not drop all the way down! pull it out, rotate the oil pump, put it back in, oops same spot!! DAMN IT.
Then 1/2 a rack of beer later my buddy and I determined (after many internet searches) that it must now be exactly "right" I didnt think we had actually moved it! but then she revved like a racer!!

Good luck
