What did the rest of the groups look like? n=1 isn't enough for a statistical conclusion of accuracy.:shhh: I always shot at least 4 5 shot groups for accuracy data even after I get a zero. No guessing.

Agreed. I have a picture of a 3 shot group from my garand at 100 yds with greek surplus that's 1 MOA, but it's not very repeatable with that ammo. I just got lucky on a good group.

That's a hell of a group. I didn't think that bolt guns and commercial ammo could be that accurate.

That was the only group I shot that day after getting it zero'd. I was kind of crunched for time unfortunately. This was however 3 consecutive shots, not just 3 that happened to contact next to each other. Was using Remington 180gr corelock ammo. Really wish I could find some 168gr, preferable match grade, stuff but seems that doesn't exist around here. I have picked up some 175gr match grade ppu to take out next time if I remember to through it in the ammo box.

edit: Looking for 168 since that is what I have been hearing works best with the 1:12 twist rate of the barrel.

Its hard to find good ammo anywhere right now. Although the new Cabela's here in GB has a good stock. Last I checked, anyway.


Spent some time around the melting pot last night. I've got 60 inguts that I would guess are about 2# ea. Gotta get my mold prepped and I can start dropping rounds.

The 175's should work good in the 12 twist, the common flaw is overstabilization. If you reload I'd get 155 BTHP's.

Unfortunately I do not have the equipment to reload so I am stuck using factory ammo. I can get more of the 175 PPU match grade but would like to find some 168.

Going the smoothest route possible, you can get everything you need to start reloading (minus actual bullet components) for around $200.

The Lee Breechlock press kit is about $130 on Amazon. Die sets are about $30-40. You can mix and match other things to get your desired kit after the fact. Like I use a Hornady digital powder scale rather than the beam style scale that came in the Lee kit.

And I plan on using that press for all my rifle rounds after I step into a progressive press for pistol ammo.

How is powder and projectile availability right now? I looked into getting everything to start reloading a little while back but was having a hard time finding the components. Seems as though primers are starting to become available in this area again but still not seeing anything for powder or projectiles, atleast not in .223 or .308.

To be totally honest, I haven't done much looking.

When the new Cabela's opened up 2 Fridays ago, I stopped in on that Tuesday. They still had shelves loaded with stuff. I just didn't look to see what all they actually had since I wasn't planning on doing any buying. Until I saw dies for $10 less than Amazon.

Anyway, armslist is having a small surge in components around here. Could be worth a look there too.

Just found a Hogue over molded stock with bottom metal, mag well, and mag spring for $85 for my 700. Really thinking about picking it up, would be a decent upgrade over the varmint stock.

Interestingly enough, I didn't think you could really bed the Hogue stock.

Do this to your Hogue stock and the flexure of the fore-end will be significantly decreased. Resting on the bi-pod I have no issues maintaining a free float condition - in fact the stock doesn't even come close. That big wide open recoil lug pocket is the root cause of the channel / barrel contact under load.

I guess I was wrong.

All of my hunting spots didn't really have a shot past 125 yards....until now.

I have a huge pasture, 300 yard shots all around. and the seeking-chasing rut activity looks like it's gonna be late this year....as in....RIFLE SEASON.

Yeah I have seen a couple bedded. Went ahead and pulled the trigger(no pun intended) on the Hogue stock. Looks like it should be here this coming Tuesday.

Thanks man! This is really nothing special as it is just a factory 700 sps varmint with a decent optic and lightened trigger. For what it is, it is a great shooting rifle.

There's no "For what it is" with an R700. That IS what they are. There's a reason they have the reputation for being the most affordable, most accurate guns out of the bocks.
