aircraft remover

so i just bought a set of aluminum rims and i want to paint them black. ive done alot of searching on here and aside from por-strip is seems like aircraft remover is the best thing to take the finish off.

so i bought a can and sprayed it on one of the rims, let it sit for about 20-30 minutes and then went and tried scraping it off.

from what i read its supposed to eat the paint away and come right off and its not. it hasnt really done anything aside from goop up my rims.

lol, am i doing something wrong? or does this stuff not work?

the clear may be different than auto paint and aircraft paint remover may not work! We used to send alot of peeling, pitted rims to have them powdercoated, they used to charge extra because it was harder to sandblast the clear off of them. Why not just smooth and sand them then paint them?

I've never tried it on rims but I used to have an Italian road frame years ago and once it got scratched and I noticed it was all chrome plated underneath and I decided to strip it off. I used aircraft stripper on that and it was easy. Applied it to the frame in a car wash, waited maybe 15 minutes and then hosed it off. This was not some piece of shite frame either so the original paint was good. I had that frame painted numerous times over the years and would always strip it off the same way whenever I got tired of it.

Tried that last year, it shriveled up the clear coat, made it look cloudy because I did not get to it quick enough.

I'll try again when the weather is warmer.

True......true......but I will say the very best shade was the bubble gum pink one that I ordered with a custom made, fillet brazed mountain frame years back (it was preceeded by another frame with a very sexy shade of baby blue and then another with an even tastier shade of peppermint patty green). Sadly, I only have non-digital pics of it. I'll see if I can't scan those for you DJ as I know you'd appreciate it as a screen saver.

so i may have waited too long? should i spray it on and go back after 5 minutes? ot should i do it in a warmer environment?

The working temperature should be in the destructions.

After getting all frustrated, I stayed put and watched the clear coat shrivel and pull away from the wheel. I scraped the stuff off, the base color is still there.

It can just be easier to have them powdercoated. $35.00 a wheel and that includes sandblasting. It's just not worth the hassle.

I have a cheap sandblasting gun and I THINK I have some media, but HF sells it if not, you're welcome to borrow it.

whenever, I can just mail it to you and you can source some media up there.
same goes for the threadstarter.

if you need to borrow the compressor to run it you'll have to come down to castle rock though
