Air bag replacing.....dangers?

Okay,

I'm aware of the potential dangers of having the thing explode as you hook it up. The question is how tricky is it?

I just totalled my 98XJ only because the air bags went off. I'll try and post a picture later. It needs front left fender, grill, front bumper, windsheild, etc. The radiator is holding but probably read to fall apart.

I plan on buying it back and getting it back on the road. The question is the air bags. I'm hoping to find a old set online (drivers and passengers). I think shipping them is out do to the explosives.

Has anyone out there done this operation?

Please let me know if it's possible and what I'd be getting in to.

Swapping out the airbags is fairly easy, just be sure the battery is disconnected. I would suggest replacing the airbag module too, sometimes the module will fail after it deploys the airbags. Other than that, its a peice of cake.

There were a pair of airbags with the control module on ebay but I wasn't going to bid until I was sure to get the Cherokee back. I e-mailed the guy to ask if I could buy them in a week or two.

I'll keep the board posted.

You will need to replace the air bag module. As far as replacing them just:

1 disconnect the battery

2 turn the key all the way to start to drain any stored electricity, then turn key to off.

3 Wait ten minutes

4 Replace both bags and module

5 Reconnect battery

6 IMPORTANT I lay on the drivers floor and reach up and turn the key to on. You don't want that bag to go off in your face if it decides to deploy. It can kill you.

7 check for codes. If everything is on the up and up there will be no codes. If there is codes you will need to take it to a shop with a scanner capable of scanning air bag codes.

If you have any questions about air bags PM me
