AC question

Since my Jeep has pretty much put on ranch duty my Jetta is my "Mode" however the VW forums ive found (except tdiforum) lack either knowledge, or the willingness to share that knowledge. Its kind of hit or miss, anyway Naxja always stepped up, so...

2001 Jetta 2.0L Manual

about 4 months ago, my Ac stopped blowing cold, It just stopped. No fade, just only ambient air temp blows.

I checked today if I had pressure in the system, via "testing" the valve with a punch and have pressure, so dont think its a leak.

There is a noise in my accesory belt area, and when the ac button is pushed the engine stumbles whenever the compressor tried to go (every few seconds)

So I figure its the compressor/clutch.

I dont have any ac equipment and would like to do most of the work myself (money is kinda tight).

Here are my questions:

1: Is it possible to get a R134 purge and flush from an ac shop, drive home, swap out the compressor, then drive back and get it refilled? or must the compressor be taken off before the flush.

2: Can I do a purge, flush, or refill with products from an auto parts store? Ive seen those canesters of R134 with a gauge, is that enough for a proper refill.

3: I found a salvage compressor with warranty from a well established yard for a great price. Can it just be installed? or do I have to add oil, if so what oil?

OK here's some advice:
1. Have the system evacuated of residual refrigerant at the shop. Change the compressor and the dryer. There maybe a screen/filter somehwere in line, change this also.

2. No to the purge. Yes to the refill IF you have tak eit back to the shop and have them evacuate the system after completing the work, need to have a vacuum in the A/C system BEFORE refilling with refrigerant. I saw a vac pump at Harbor freight rather inexpnsive, but probably the same costs as the labor at the a/c shop.

3. You will need to make sure it has oil. I am unfamiliar with Jetta's. It could either have a seperate sump or the oil could flow through the system. The correct oil will be sold alongside the refrigerant. It's a special blend so make sure you get the oil for R134(a?).
