Ok be gentle, I'm new to jeep still but I learn fast.

Where is the tcu located in a 98 xj?

And if the silver and red data tag is missing from a tcase, what other way can I identify it?

Can a np231 be used in place of a np242?

Should be under the passenger side dash - I could be mistaken, memory is the first to go...
And if the silver and red data tag is missing from a tcase, what other way can I identify it? what is your shift pattern in the cab? A (2wd - 4hi part time - 4hi full time - Neutral - 4lo) pattern is a NP242. The NP231 will not have the 4hi full time. Underneath the 242 has a slightly longer "bulge" where the shift rod extends - there could be differences that I'm not aware of as well.

Can a np231 be used in place of a np242? Except for the associated linkage and rear yoke I don't see why not.

Lower dash (knee panel) on the passenger side

Assuming its factory, the number of shift positions will tell you if its 231 or 242. 231 has 4 positions, 242 has 5 positions.

Yes, only difference is a little bit of wiring, and the shift gate in the cab

I don't know what either of you are talking about? it's right next to the gas pedal on 97+ xjs. :looser:

Found them in the 98 and 96.

Sideways, what year is that module from in the pic you posted? I need to see one in a 97, not a 98-01, but a 97. Trust me, I'm going somewhere with is. It would be a huge help!!

The year of the TCM is a 99, I have a 98 and a 97 TCM in the garage. 98-01 the connectors are the same, but in 99 the part number went from an AA to an AB on the TCU the label also went from blue to green. 97 has a connector that looks similar and has the same pinout, but the connector is keyed differently.

What exactly are you planning here?

As for the 96 IIRC it's in the passenger side above the glove box like the earlier years, but I've never tinkered with a 96 (bastard one off year).
