96 xj sport 5.3 swap

Yeah something isn't right dude. If its not nice and pink something is wrong. $650 for a rebuilt unit is pretty good. You're going to spend that much on parts if you buy all the upgraded stuff for it like the hardened sun shell etc.... Plus its a lot less work and probably comes with a warranty of some sort. I'd say do it if you can swing it... Make sure you flush your cooler out before hooking the new trans to it.

thanks, lol. idk why but for some reason ive just been convinced its not a internal issue. i guess i just didnt want to pony up for another trans.

what im hoping is the guy will take a 2wd core in exchange for a so i can keep my 65 and buildit my self some time in the future. i eventually want to build the motor out to a 383 stroker with a good tune and put down 500ish hp/tq (been watching too much roadkill, lol)

the jeep takes up to much room in the garage to fit it and a trans rebuild in there successfully ( HOA no likey half assembled jeep in the drive way pouring out ATF)

Trans fluid should be red not pink, if it's pink it's got water in it and the frictions are no good. From the pics that seems like normal wear. I can't see any big chunks or so much it costs the entire pan. I've seen trannys with a 1/4" of sludge and big chunks of metal and they still worked ok. Does that 650 rebuild come with any updates? Valve bodies wear and need repair or replacement that most tranny people don't know about. If it doesn't come with updated servos, accumulators, sun shell, new solenoids/harness, and pressure control solenoid with updated screens I would definitely pass. That's all stuff that should be mandatory in a 4l60e rebuild.

Red... Pink... I'm colorblind so that is the same color to me. The fluid in his trans is burned and my bet is damaged internals.

Does it smell burned? It looks really dark to me

a bit, but its also mostly "fresh" fluid with around 50 miles on it.

what gets me is that its not tgrowing any trans codes, i would think it would throw sonething, torque shows that tge pcm knows theres a shift error, it also shows it shifting to forth when it lugs into second

When I burned up my overrun clutches and had that seal that got nicked I didn't have any codes. I didn't even have codes when the sprag was in backwards.

It sounds like there are multiple problems. Honestly I'd cut your losses and go with a reman unit if you can swing it.

yea, ive got a lead on a few rebuilt units semi local tome with some updates.

id really love to do a performabuilt or gear star performance unit but 2500 bucks is a bit much for me to swing

That's a ridiculous amount of money for a trans. I put some upgraded stuff in mine and the parts cost was under $500. That included high energy frictions, high energy band, hardened sun shell, Transgo shift kit, Corvette servo. Unless you are pushing 1k HP I wouldn't even bother with one of those spendy units... in which case you wouldn't want a 4L60/65E anyway :)

yea i figure the most this motor will ever put out would be around 400hp/tq and its unlikely id do that for a while

welp, called TOD on the trans, and after talking to local builders and non-local builders, ive decided that allthough i dont trust myself to build the trans, i trust everyone else a whole lot less.

every one i talked to said theyd just go in and fix what was wrong with it instead of replacing all the seals and frictions, no one wanted to go the extra step to fix any of the factory weak spots that should be address when its apart

so ive ordered rebuild parts from gmtransmissionparts.com and im going to figure out how to rebuild it my self

Get an atsg book for the basic and pick the brains on the lt1ls1/LS1 site and I'm sure you can't go wrong. Did you get all new electronic parts? Update solenoid screens, servos, accumulators, and sunshell? Those should be automatic updates for any build, even stock.

im goin to go thru the electronics one i have it apart and see whats good. i did order a wire harness tho, if the valve body is int bad shape with shoddy electronice ill but a remanufactured unit from GMtrans with the updated sonnax TCC valve

i got a pretty inclusive rebuild kit with hi energy clutches, hardened sunshell, kelvar 2-4 band, corvette servo, seals etc.

That band will be a race type shift. They grab something fierce. Solenoids are dirt cheap for acdelco so I'd just put in new ones.

your right, but i know theyre good. ill know what ill do before it goes back together. if i feel like theVB needs enough ill just get the reman unit from gmtransprts with known good electronics and the updated tcc valve

update:

after much debate and searching i found a guy to build the trans, dropped it off monday and was ready wednesday night, appartantly the 3/4 clutches were non-existent and the 2-4 band was so bad it damaged the reverse input drum.

jeep is mostly put back together at this point still need to install the dipstick, plumb the new cooler, put the seat back in( installed the body side of the novak shifter kit while the trans was out), install the drive shaft, fill up the trans and in theory it should be good to go.

Great news bud :) so stoked for you!

thanks! lol

im going to drive it al week (in theory) so i can burn off enough fuel to fix my leaking return line at the tank.

going to get a windsheild installed next saturday and get it inspected/registered theres still lots of little stuff to do, for one i need to do something about the shifter, its not covered very well and it is heating the air up pretty quick.
also need to start seriously looking into setting up the A/C its already in the low 90s almost every day now, and working a/c in my jetta has spoiled me a bit haha
