96 cherokee turns over but no start

My 2001XJ PCM causes the ASD relay to be energized by providing a ground to it ...when the relay latches up it provides power to coil...I'm pretty sure it energizes the fuel pump relay by providing a ground to it also....So...you might want to disconnect the battery, and then disconnect all 3, 32pin PCM connectors, inspect and clean them...being very careful not to create a problem...maybe gently inspect each pin with a flashlight and paper clip...on both harness and the PCM...A bad PCM input or output signal connection can hose you over...

I will check all this tomorrow night. Thanks for the info on the PCM. Anything at this point in time is worth a look.

REPLACE THE CAM ANGLE SENSOR

It is only 20 bucks and takes 5 mins to change. This was suggested earlier as well. Located inside the distributor. Also called the distributor pickup sometimes.

Hey Kim I hope you have a garage. It's damn cold up here. If you have a way to tow it my garage has a heater and I'd be glad to help you out. My 96 is still not in my garage yet so there is some room yet.

I got some help from a friend with a four wheeler and we towed and pushed it in the garage the other night where there is plenty of heat. Supposed to get below zero this weekend at night.

Replaced the cam position sensor and still no start. I give up:dunno: My wallet is empty also. This sucks.

How good is the battery? My 96 would not start with my weak battery even with a 250 amp starter charger. I swapped in the 94 and it started right up. Even though I was able to crank it over. I'm going to hit the books for yah Kim and good luck. I'll let you know if I find anything.
P.S. as I read on here.

Battery is fine. Just replaced a couple of months ago. I am going to try and swap in a used PCM that matches mine and see what happens. If that doesn't help than it goes to my mechanic after Christmas. Just sucks as I have a local trail ride to go on this weekend. Oh well.

Anyone know the right way to check for codes on a 96 cherokee. I followed the directions in my Haynes book and it didn't show anything.

Well from now on I will start with a used computer to check for this kindof a problem as replacing the PCM worked when replacing the the crank and cam position sensor. Lesson learned. Thanks for all the help everyone. Greatly appreciated.

Good to hear you figured it out!
Don't throw away the bad PCM...I am looking for a bad one that I can use the connectors from...want to try and make a break out box that WE can use for troubleshooting these kinds of problems...Let me know if it's available.....if they give you money for it when you buy a new one then trade it in....

 I would take those sensors you tried for trouble shooting back and say they gave you the wrong part, if your strapped for Xmas money like me :)
Or you can keep the old ones and be that much more ahead of the game. Glad you found the problem! Should be a CHECK ECU light in the cab lol.
