I was wondering if you can take the 242 transfer case out and put a 231 in. The Grand has all wheel drive, let me know thanks. Happy Holidays to every one.

Are you sure its the 242? I thought the Grands came with a 249 or some such creature...
In XJs, the 242 and 231 are bolt-in affairs: totally compatible.
Trouble here is that you are talking about a 95 Grand which used a different transmission and had no 231 option (I don't think it did, anyway) so I'm not sure if the ass end of your trans has the same bolt pattern as the AW4 in our Cherokees.

I think you'd be fine but can't confirm that the bolt patterns are all the same.

Thanks I am thinking of buying this Grand and I am not sure what transfer case it has in it. All I know it has 4hi and 4low. Thanks for the info.

ZJs came with 3 t'case choices: NP231 or NP242 part-time cases or NV249 full-time case.

ZJ trans *should* have the same bolt pattern as an AW4, since the ZJ guys talk about converting 249s to 231/242s, and it wouldn't make too much sense financially to produce different patterned transfer cases since YJ/XJ/ZJ/TJs all use common cases. However, I would definitely ask this question on NAGCA.com, since they cater to Grand Cherokees.

Edit: if all you have is 4hi (or Full-Time), N and 4lo, it is a NV249 t'case. Search on NAGCA for conversions.

x2 on the above. My brother-in-law has a '98 ZJ that has seen all three transfer cases. Started with a 249. Swapped to a 242 so he could have 2-wheel drive again. Then swapped again to a 231 when the 242 blew up. All bolted right up.

Thats correct, It is a NV249, a Good case, but the upgrade is the NP242. i like the NP231 for the Cherokee, but for the grand IMO the NP242 is a better fit.

The fulltime 4wd is one of my Favorite options on my jeep.

Like mentioned WWW.NACGA.COM

Thanks for all the help. Now that where on this is 2500 a good price for it, it has 1,200.00 thousand miles and it is the 6 cid.
