92 XJ wont put any power to ground

92 4.0L AW4 Np231 179k miles
Today as I was leaving school my Jeep would not put any power to the pavement as I gave it gas. I tried all the forward gear-sets and even reverse after I had it out of traffic and still nothing. I adjusted the throttle cable and still no output. I'm thinking this could be the transmission not shifting from neutral. On start-up it would drive forward for 25-35 ft but would then revert to this powerless stage. Any suggestions?

Before this the tranny was acting up and would slowly build up speed until it would shift into 2nd but I presumed this was only due to the cold transmission. Thanks for helping .

Check trans fluid?

I went and put enough ATF in to get it home and will return with more results in the morning. Thanks for the help

if its low on atf it will not come out of neutral.
