I have never dropped a front drive shaft on an XJ before... can someone explain how this is done?

I need to replace the seal on the slip yoke. How does one accomplish this? Do I have to seperate anything and then get it pressed back in?

5/16" wrench is all you need to remove the drive shaft. What seal are you talking about? Pinion seal, the seal at the xfer case, or the rubber seal right at the splined slip shaft? The slip joint will pull apart, just make sure to mark the alignment.

Wait a minute. There's a seal there at the slip yoke? All I ever found was mud. :P

Yup, that is the seal I'm talking about in the slip joint. Does it take any special tools to pull it a part, or is it something i can do by hand?

Some of the "cap" pieces unscrew, and some of them you have to pry off by unbending a few small tabs, and then the cap with the seal in it comes off. I do not know if the seal is replaceable item, or if you have to replace the cap assembly.

Just to be clear, you're talking about this piece right?

(picture is actually a Bronco shaft)

The seal is integral to the metal cap, so you have to replace the whole cap. The slip joint should pull apart by hand, but can be a bit tough as you pull the splines through the seal. You might want to take a dremel and slice the metal cap lengthwise to help get it off. All the ones I've messed with were just pressed on. I suggest putting the cap onto the spline section first, slide the splined sections together, and then push the cap down in place. Otherwise, you can't see the splines to get them lined up, plus it gives the seal room to push out of the way when you push the bigger od of the splines through.

The metal cap was around $10 when I had to replace the one on my YJ (snagged the zerk, ripping it out and splitting that cap). I had this seal fall apart on my MJ and cause lots of side-side slop, but I just replaced the whole shaft with another from the junkyard for $8.
