my friend has an 87 ford econoline 3/4 ton work van that dies on him while he's driving. it has the 4.9 straight six and an automatic. he doesn't have alot of money and he's trying to diagnose the problem without spending tons of money on replacement parts. The van also has two gas tanks. asometimes, it will have a hard time cranking in the morning on first start up. some fast help woul;d be much appreciated, were trtying to fix it today, thanks.

Can you define "dies"?

My parents minivan would just randomly shut off, engine and electronics without warning. Took it to the mechanic and they thought it was the computer, turns out it wasn't it was wires coming apart. (Go figure, they didn't check that before they tried to replace an $750 part), never bringing it there again.

Thats the only experience I have with something like that, you might get more help with more info.

hard cranking with fuel injection may well be the same here as with an XJ. If the fuel pump drainback valve is leaking, it will take a while for the fuel rail to fill up. Suggest to your friend that he turn on ignition and wait a few seconds before cranking, or do what often works on an XJ - turn on for a few seconds, off, then on again, to make the pressurizing cycle repeat itself, before cranking.

Obviously there could be other issues, bad sensor, ignition, etc. and the first suggestion would be a tuneup. Also, just to open up the engine compartment and unplug/replug every connector you can find. Lube them if they look bad. Check all grounds.

Make sure the fuel filter isn't clogged.
