I know there are a ton of these, but not many for the 8274 so I'm going to post another bumper build.

I made my design off of JRC and Starboard M http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=968021 The main difference is that I used flat steel instead of tube, not a real advantage just easier to modify. It weighs 90lbs and yes before anyone asks, It does have tie-ins, they're just welded in instead of bolted.

I got the winch for $300 from a local guy that didn't know anything about its history, just that it was heavy and on the truck when he got it. It is in great shape for being a 1980 model.(Check the mfg code) Even has the original cable. I rebuilt the lower end and gave it some fresh paint. I think it turned out looking great.

NICE!!!! love the bumper. could also work with another one if you decide to sell that one. nice job.

Yeah I wanted to keep my options open so I built it from the specs of the epi9.0, because that was the other winch I was considering, if I bought hew that is.

I am also in the middle of building a bumper to hold my 8274. I had to rebuild mine as well (1981), but it was free! Those are some kickarse winches.

I am going to put my XRC8 on the rear, and the 8274 up front. Thanks for the ideas, it looks great!

nice! i love my 8274 been on 3 different rigs i've owned and it's still all original from '77

The 8274 is the best winch ever made, or you could go "old school" and drop in a Bellevue.

I just traded this one even for a XD9000i

Good work on the bumper!

Thanks for all the comments.
Those are good looking winches and Im glad I went this route, instead of buying a new winch. The way I see it everything else on my heep is rebuilt, or I built so I didnt really want to let it down and get some youngster winch, I wanted the old fart sitting on my bumper.

When did they actually start making the 8274? I called warn and they told me in the 80's they used the MFG code to keep up with the years and the last digit was the year it was made, mine is JC0 so it is a 1980 model.

The motor on mine isn't even a made by warn its a Preston Motor #MJB4401. The stator looked fine and brushes are still in good shape. The only thing in the motor I replaced was the little fiber washer on the endcap. It was brittle and broke upon hitting the floor. Its amazing these winches last like they do. Its 30 year old and with a little tinkering works fine.

The Bellevue is the predecessor to the 8274 and the one I had was a late 60's military model. I think the 8274 came out in the early to mid 70's.

We use the 8274s on both of our kill trucks, on the front for recovery and on the top of the boxes to in conjunction with the hydraulic booms. They will work all day, rain, sleet, snow, heat.

We do have to rebuild them on occasion, but man do they earn their keep.

Even though its rated at 8k, we have pulled our trucks out of some tough spots, even when fully loaded with carcasses and guts.

Yeah, someone did some side by side comparison testing, and the 8274 is VERY conservatively rated. Powerful, still the fastest electric winch out there, and it'll hold 150 feet of cable. No wonder they still sell them to this day (albeit for a BIG chunk of change)

I posted on NAXJA about a year ago to a crazy English mod for twin motors on the 8274! They build them for winching competitions. The video on that website showed a fast moving pull.

Here is a link to that thread: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=980578

I went to a winching comp in France last year when I lived in Europe, and most of the guys had twin motor 8274's and 24 volts. They were stupid fast. Like you had to run beside them to keep up.
