8.8 mini spools. questions?

I need to lock up the 8.8. Been looking at the choices out there and I think that the mini spool is my choice. I haven't seen a full spool available for the 8.8. Any reasons as to why not? How does a mini spool work vs. a full spool? Will it work with my 3.73 gears and also when I upgrade to 4.88's?

I decided on this locker because I would like a full locker and the price is alot lower than most other lockers. I don't have alot of horsepower to strain my axle as much as most do with the 8.8 because I run a tired 2.5. This is not my dd so street driving is not a problem.
Any info available is great. Thanks for the help.

I put a mini spool in my XJ Dana 44 and I really like it but it comes at a price, like a lincoln locked rear.
Tire wear on the street (I dont daily drive)
Oversteer in rain, snow, ice.
Wont side hill well in slick conditions.
Its hard on rear springs if they are soft when driving on the street.

I live in SoCal where it doesnt rain, snow or ice much and I rarely drive on the street so I dont mind the problems.

search on mini spool and lincoln locker to get a lot of answers.

A mini spool replaces the spider gears with a couple of splined blocks to tie the axles together;
The reason you dont see full spools is because you need to run
"C- Clip eliminators", if I recall correctly from the mustang world.

I have run spooled on my DD and liked it except for; the chirping got old when pulling into "nice" places, people think you are "peeling out".
and being double locked in the snow was an adventure.

Its a beat to death topic

Thank you both for the replies. I knew that the mini spool would work like a lincoln locker, I just want something that will work with my 3.73 gears and when I go to 4.88's. So I take it that I can use the mini with both sets of gears? Sorry, don't know much about gears yet.
I was also looking at the Powertrax no-slip locker but decided on the mini because of the cost. I would like to be locked in the rear before Memorial weekend.
Having just built some soft leaf packs will this cause problems? I have 4.5" of lift and they flex ALOT.
Thanks for the help.

Yes the mini spool will work with both gear sets.
I personally would prefer a spool over a powertrax, since a spool is predictable.
You sould be fine with the leaves..I cant think of a reason you wouldnt be besides axlewrap from more traction?

Thanks. I have anti-wrap spring perches to help me out there. I was just on the Richmond web site and was going through the mini spools and lockrights write-ups. Looks like I will be sticking with the spool. Now, to find a good vendor. Thanks again for the help.
If anyone out there is running the mini spool in the 8.8 let me know what you think of it and how it has performed for you. Good or bad.

What is the company name? Just Tellico? Don't think I have heard of them. That would be nice if I could get a mini for that price. I will be locked in a couple of weeks than.

i had a auburn mini spool in my 8.8.
dont need c-clip eliminator with that one. when i was researching them I was told (spobi?) that c-clip eliminator kits for 8.8's were generally for drag racers and wouldnt hold up to everyday driving well.

I would good with the auburn mini again if I needed to...wonder if they make one for a 8.25?

The problem I have with running a mini spool in an 8.8 is using the stock 8.8 carrier.
The carrier is by far the weak link in a pretty decent axle.
Using it spooled is asking for trouble.
I'd actually prefer a well done Lincoln to a mini spool.
At least then you can weld in extra support to the carrier housing.

Good point Brad. But I don't think that I will have as much of a problem with this as most. I only run the 2.5 engine and have only 3.73 gears right now. I think the only way I would break the carrier is very very stupid driving. I am also new to welding yet so I don't trust myself welding it properly.
Thanks again.

Tellico4X4.com wants $129.95 plus shipping for a mini spool. Little to much for a mini spool for me. I will check out a couple more places and see what prices are going to be. Who knows, I just might end up welding the sh_t out of it..

www.completeoffroad.com

...is close to you.

$109

Thanks for the link Adam. I was just talking with Richmond gear and they said that their mini spools are on back order for all distributors until June. They are priced at $89.99. Not bad but can't wait that long. Moser is to expensive for me at $179.99. If I keep searching and keep on coming up with these results than I might as well just weld it.
Time to contact Complete Off Road and see if they have them available.

I got a D44 minispool from Mike at Complete Offroad for $50. Is the 8.8 more complicated due to the c-clips?

Gentleman at Richmond said that a dana axle is alot easier and more availability than the 8.8. That is why such a price difference. I just left a message at Complete Off Road for a price quote and if they had one available.

LOL!! I called and left a message. I just want to make sure this will work. I never really trusted ebay. I want to know what company made it and what it is made out of. I never messed with my diff's before so I want to do this right the first time.
Thanks Opie for the link.
