OK so my son has a 91 XJ with a 5.5" rubicon express short arm lift. He is working towards getting an SYE but in the mean time what is everyones opinion on him running Badlands green trail without the SYE? It will be at least 6 months before he can get the SYE and he is itching to get the Jeep off-road (purchased with the 5.5 lift so he has never had it off road yet).

I realize that all Jeeps are different and that no one can answer for his exact Jeep; I just was wondering what others opinion was.

Thanks

As you say, each Jeep is slightly different.

If you have plenty of yoke engagement left with the rear suspension in droop.

And it doesn't vibrate.

Then I'd say go enjoy it.

My t-case is a 231, it has a 3/4" drop I believe (whatever comes with the RE 5.5"), with the stock Chrysler 8.25 diff. Highway vibes are fine, hardly anything after like 40mph. obviously I would be taking it easy, not really flexing too much, just trail riding.

I should mention, the jeep stated in the original post is mine...thanks dad

eh i say give it a whirl. take i easy and hope nothing breaks.

if it does, well your just getting things broken in so to speak as well as getting used to wrenching after riding

basically i'm saying there is no garauntee things wont break but you should get used to the feeling that something might break.

off road is abuse

Seems like an easy answer, Find some near by rock and flex the heck out of it. If it doesn't come out then go for it (That's what she said)

When it spits the rear driveshaft out of the t-case just stop and put it back in. Nick

Thanks for all the input. We will do some testing and see what happens.

If the drive shaft pulls out won't it drain the transfer case?

91' ? Yes, the rear yoke seals the output shaft on the T-Case in that year.

I had a 93 that had 6" and I wheeled the piss out of it w/o a sye for about 4 years. I ran tellico, badlands, (pink and orange), LBL, Drummmond Isl., and alot of muddy michigan trails, NEVER had a problem (other than axle wrap that took my yoke out of my 8.25)

sye's aren't necessary, untill you need them, which usually is when you go over the 5 to 6" range. the 97 and newer t-cases were longer than the earlier ones which is why they almost always need an sye even with as little as 2". drop the case about 1" and wheel the wheels of the thing.

I had a 91 with a manual tranny 75% of the shaft was still in the transfer case. It had long arms 6.5 rustys with revolver shackles. The only time the driveshaft ever came out was when the center pins broke and the axle walked backwards.

Wheel it and fo geta about it. Hellhalf the fun of owning jeeps is wrenching on them when they break.
