4WD Low problems...

I searched, but couldn't find any exact info on this.

I have a '96 Sport 4x4.

I can shift from 2 Low to 4 High just fine, but as soon as I try and put it in 4 Low, it works for a total of 5 seconds, then pops into neutral.

I have checked to make sure it's engaged fully and it is.

I had this problem on my '91 sport as well.

Any ideas?

BTW- 231 transfer case

Thanks...

Did you engage it when you were rolling and while the tranny is in Neutral? If not, it makes it more difficult to shit into 4lo, and at times can make it pop out.

look underneath to see if your tranny crossmember is damaged

My 98 does the same thing even stopped in neutral. But once I put it back into high or 2wd, then back into low, it will stay. Only slips out the first time. Sucks when it happens on a hill. hasta

Michael, did the shift lever have to be bent much like it says to fit the xj? I'm wondering how hard of an install that would be, I've never worked on transfercases or have experience bending by using heat. Do you have any pictures of yours?

Three things:
1. After putting in a drop you should adjust the linkage.
2. Your tranny mount might be going and thus allowing for more "flex" on the transmission and transfer case as you shift and thus causing trouble.
3. Your linkage bushigns might be worn out and allowing for slop thus not allowing you to shift all the way out to put it in 4L far enough for it to stay there.
