4WD Front Jumps/Skips

Hi,

I've had my '95 XT 4.0 Manual for the last 8 years and have nearly 190K on it. It has a complete OME 2.5" lift with BFG AT/KO 31s and had very few problems in that time. Off road time is mainly backcountry trail access here in Colorado.

Engaging Part Time 4WD last week showed up a problem. From a standing start, in a straight line, or when turning the front end jumps/skips/hops. The best way to describe it is that it is as if the front axle turns slower than the rear and so the wheels are having to skip to catch-up. It's the type of problem you see when in a slow hard turn on dry pavement having forgotten to disengage 4WD (not a common mistake - but you know what I mean). The problem seems to get better after about 15mph (just testing) and is as bad on dry pavement as it is on snow/ice.

I checked the forums and closest type problem I can see is u-joint binding as one possibility. Also, making sure the transfer linkage is adjusted correctly. I took this into a shop I really trust, and they believe the transfer case is done for... not the right time for a major expense for me. Does this sound like the transfer case? Is there something I can ask the shop to check before just replacing this?

Another problem that I can't discount as related - when driving back on snowploughed roads in severe winter driving conditions last week. I was in 2WD on the interstate and the front end was bouncing up and down as if the shocks were partly locked out (frozen?). This bouncing did not increase/decrease with speed. In 7 winter seasons this has never happened before either. I looked over and saw a pickup going through the same thing but other vehicles seemed fine. It is odd though...I have about 90K on my OME shocks and it's driving great otherwise. The shocks rebound as normal when checking them out and this has only happened this one time. Could this and my 4WD problems be related?

thanks for any help - Mark

watch your feet on the clutch or gas. I have the same deal. ease off the clutch slower.... I can tell you its your foot bouncing if you realize it or not. 100% positive.

Thanks...I don't think it's an old clutch problem as this happens in any gear while driving along at up to 15mph and not only when changing gear. It also only happens in part-time 4wd. My Jeep is driving as well now in 2WD as it did when it only had 50K on it (better since the OME kit and FIPK/TB were added since then)... This is also a very aggressive skip - something you just wouldn't want to spend any time experiencing
