"The 1971-1977 Ford front dana 44 coil mounting brackets are 4 separate cast pieces(radius arm mounting wedges) welded at the top and bottom which can be cut off. 1978-1979 front dana 44 axles were the only years with the cast in wedges."
just quoted that from therangerstation. so would the 1997 hp44 be the best swap for me? what are the draw backs to the 1971-1977?
Dana 44 Reverse Spiral solid front axle from a 1977 Ford F150 4x4. This axle type spanned 1976-1977 on the F100 & F150 4x4 trucks. The major change was to disk brakes. They have a 2.75 diameter axle tube with 1/2" or 3/8” thick walls and 5-297x u-joints.
sounds like this is the axle I'm looking for then. and it also happens to be the most expensive d44 of that model. what about the full width 44/9. lets explore that option. so the full width 44 is from a 1979 f250 (69.5") and the 9" comes from a ford van (68")?
Why would you re-tube it? Just to narrow it? Why not leave it full width?
The F250 44 will be 8 lug and the Econoline van rear will be a 60. I dont believe the 9" came in 8 lug. The 44 will have bigger breaks and flat top knuckles.
You can find a complete 77ish welded 44 on the sac craigslist for under $300 if your patient.
Grab them and get the radius arms too. Then you can mod up a cross member on your XJ and have a 3 link long arm and keep it simple without retubing it. Many will narrow a HP44 and go with waggy length long side (passenger side) as they are/were easy to find in junk yards. I miss scrounging those Sac pick and pulls! Awesome yards!
I find bigger axles here where I live that it isn't a heavily wheeler friendly area like Norcal. I can find HP60s easy! In Sac I would have to :twak: guys for it no doubt if I was even lucky enough to be there when the F350 came to the yard and was there 1st even!
