would i want 4.56 with a d35 and 33s,the owner of a shop i shop at told me that they were too low and i wanted 4.10 at the lowest or i would not take off????????(something like that). what do you all think would there be any problem with 4.56 most people say i want that but i dont know he says he runs a 4.10 with his 33 (the guy at the shop he has a tj tho dont know if that matters) Opions

just about every parson who has run both will tell you 4.56 plain and simple. 4.10a are good for 31s and some what on 32s but not 33s unless you have a stroker or a blower on your 4.0.

I run 4.88's with 33's...the taller tires and deeper gears actually work out to the same effective ratio as the tires and 3.73's that came stock...if you don't gear it deep enough, your fuel economy is out the window and the lugging will hurt your engine and drivetrain..

so with the 4.56 and 33 i will get better gas then the 4.10 and does any one know what he is talking about not taking off
He's retarded.

It will take off better with lower gears, period....Except, of course in bizarro world.

The "not taking off" thing males zero sense to me...deeper gears like a 4.56 IMPROVE take-offs...

That dude's a jackoff.

4.88 and 33's are perfect. I have 4.56, wish I had 4.88's -if I could have them with the troublesome 8.25 chryco axle.

I dunno what that dude is talking about. The lower (numerically higher) gears will 'take off' a LOT better than stock.

Where the drawback of deep gears shows up is at highway speeds. The engine will be revving out higher. Whether or not that translates into more or less MPG is anybody's guess.

I have opted for 4.56:1 on 33" for my trail rig (wish now I had done 4.88 "just because" but have never felt undergeared with 4.56) and will soon have 4.56:1 in my DD streety Jeep for 30"-31" (recently sold 2/3 of my 4.10:1 sets to make this happen)

4.10-4.88 will be a huge improvement over stock 3.07 or 3.55 IMHO.

I run a micro-motor...i'd have 5.13's if they were available

ok then, i guess that is what i am going to go with. i picked up a used d35 complete with 4.56 and detroit locker today and asked him a question about them and he said that i should change it to a 4.10 and thought i should ask cuase the guy i got it from ran it with 33 thanks for the help any more input would be great now i just need to gear my front then install my rear

OK,

first of we arn't dealing with full deck here. and neither is he.
your all XJ people and we need to go back to Jeep school and remember a few things about "other" jeeps... (I'm joking)

but seriously.
TJ's with with auto tranny's only have a 3 speed. as in no overdrive. 4.10's and 33's are a perfect combo for that application. but in our godworthy XJ realm we are blessed with among other things, an overdrive slushbox.
heck, I personally run 4.88's on my 33" BFG's. but if I didn't have another gear to grab then yes I would go a ratio or two # lower.

the general rule of thumb as I see it...
4.0 auto OD
4.10/31"s
4.56/33"s
4.88/35"s

4 banger
4.56/31"s
4.88/33"s

4.0 no/OD
4.10/33"s
4.56/35"s

no if he does have either a manual tranny or OD then he is a knuckle head and I would stop buying from him.

Your ratios for the non od 4.0 are kinda deep. 4.56 with 35 will have you turning 3000 at 70 where 4.88 with an OD your turning 2400 even at 4.10 your turnin 2700. A couple members of my local club run 4.10 with thier non OD 4.0s and on the highway they hate it. Yes they do give up a little crwal but the 998 trany does a better job mutipying the tourqe at trail speeds than the AW4 does.

thanks you for explaining that out rawbrown that makes alot of sense i am going to print that out that way when i talk to him i can ask him about it if he says i should still go with the 4.10 then i am just going to buy them somewhere else

keep in mind that there are alot of factors tied into gears. mainly how you intend to use your jeep. how do you feel about fuel economy? what I spec'd out is just kinda a rough guidline that I have seen since I got into gears. they are the, "you can't go wrong with this setup" combo's.

sorry i am stupid i need it spelled out for me does that mean i will get worse gas mileage with 4.56 then 4.10???? If so are there any other real large problems

Sorry Trying hard To learn and stop the stupid questions
