Does anyone know if a 1984 4.2 straight 6 Cylinder head will fit on a 1987 4.0 straight 6 block?

It will fit, cause 4.0 heads fit on 4.2s, but youll have to run the 4.2 intake mani and carb and junk.

Should - that's a new enough 258 block to be the "Wide Deck" that used the same pattern as the 242. Why? I ask because you'll have to switch intake and exhausts (as mentioned) and you'll have to do some fabrication to retain the MPFI setup - most F/I 258's were aftermarket TBI systems. Also, you can expect lower compression, and an attendant decrease in power (I don't have numbers - never bothered to run them.)

If you have the entire engine, you'd be better off using the crankshaft and rods to build yourself a stroker, and start the head on a convoy to me so I can section it with the bandsaw for research purposes...

I guess I was in hurry when I posted and didn't realize that I was still in the Colorado forum. No wonder it took so long to get an answer. I've also been off-line for a week. I was (gasp) wheeling in southwestern Utah. Thanks for the info. We're building a stroker for a buddy. We gave him our old block but no head. We could get one from the junkyard but he wants to use his 4.2 head. My suggestion was to try and scrounge the HO head and intake.
