300cid?

I've been told you can build a 4.0L block to a 300cid (4.9L). Is this acually possible without major cylinder bore work?

4.7 is kind of the range of no big issues. going to 4.9 or 5.0 entails boring the cylinders to the limit and a bit beyond. A good machine shop could sleeve the block for you and get around that problem, but is it worth the hassles? 4.7L is about .060 over.

Magnafluxing, sonic testing, sleeving... all possible and not at a cheap price...
Question is why?

More power? go 4.7 and throw a blower on it and forget about it

Possible - yes. Easy - no. You need to bore from 3.875" to 4.000" (+.125") and install a crankshaft that has been offset ground to 4.000" (a 4.060" is available) - which will also require clearance work on the oil pan rails.

However, going to the 4.5/4.6 or so stroker is easily done with a regular bore (or close to it) and the 258 crankshaft...)

5-90
