3.5'' Lift

hey i called down to rubicon express and the guy said that you could go 6 months without getting an sye. i assume he means you just have to put up with the vibes. Thats for a 3.5 by the way

RE makes some decent products but I have yet to find anyone or hear of anyone who knows anything about xj's there. Time has nothing to do with needing a SYE.

If you lift it (and properly set up shims) and have No or almost No vibes great you are set. If that does not work, then add a transfercase drop and re-shim. If that still does not work, the SYE is the only thing that will do it for ya (shimming again of course). On a newer XJ, I would plan on the SYE, you may very well not Need it.

Any vibration does hurt driveline u-joint wear. The more the vibe the worse the wear, the less the vibe the less the additional wear.

You can get as frustrated as you want searching, but many people stop posting info on over asked questions because we do not want to spend the time to type the answer over and over again. The better you are at searching the quicker you can find info on what you need.

I'm asking 6,600 or best offer for the suzuki. It has a lot of extras including; a yoshimura tri oval carbon fiber muffler, matching helmet, matching jacket, tinted wind screen, swing arm spools, frame sliders, k&n air filter, decals, gloves, andabout 7,300 miles. Oil has been changed every 2,000 miles with silkolene full synthetic oil. Great condition. But I just hit a dog yesterday and laid her down. (Ahhhh) Only minor cosmetic damage that will be getting fixed. But its time to get rid of it. This is the second sign in the past month, the first being pulled over for standing her up. But i want to be a state trooper and dont feel like jeopardizing my career over something that's just a littl etoo much fun for me. send me your email addy and ill send some pictures.

Yea guys I have been searching around a lot on here trying to do some research without bugging you guys as much as possible. But again I am still a newbie and want to make sure I am going in the right direction. I understand that i will more than likely have to get a SYE, because a number of you insist that i do, and i want to take every precaution so that i dont damage my baby. But ok so if i get the SYE for the rear and have to get an extended driveshaft, what about the front? Does the front driveshaft vibrate as well and will that need a SYE as well as an extended driveshaft there to? It seems the further I look into it the bigger my "to buy" list gets. LOL

Remember that I only want my jeep to look good as well as sit good. Sure she will see some offroad time but nothing serious as to what your rigs see. I only want it to look good an remain practical. There will be no articulation or serious rock crawling. I just want my xj to sit up a little higher. So i dont think i need to get all of the serious stuff a lot of you 4x4 junkies need. My day will come when i become a 4x4 junkie but for now, I gotta keep it simple and cheap.

After playing with Michael and the guys this weekend...

IF it is a daily driver and you are short in funds due to school, even if you do sell the Bike:

Stay with a budget lift. Look for used parts in the classifieds for shackles and a spacer or Grand cherokee factory springs. Every XJ is different and most will take 30's without issues.

If you have to go 3"s, like I did? Like Michael said, go with a kit. NO Procomp. I would ONLY Recommend Rubicon Express or Rusty's. DON'T go add-a-leaf. For tires, if you are on a College Budget, check out HightechRetreads.com. Only go with a 3" lift if you have an extra $700 set aside for the additional possibility that a SYE or a new driveshaft might be needed.

Oh yeah, don't cut yourself short on shocks. I went cheap Pro-comps. I needed new shocks, but I didn't know if I would be going higher. Don't do Procomp. Largest majority on the forums recommend Old Man Emu.

Unless you like to ride your bike in the winter, plan on the SYE. I put the RE 3.5" on my 2000 and could barely get out of the driveway (even after trying shims) because the pinion angle was so bad. The U-joints were almost binding.

I just got my RE 3.5" super flex w/ full leafs, OME shocks, and adj. LCA's yesterday. I got a -case drop with it as well. I'll be putting it on this weekend, and then in about 2 weeks (week after install), I'll buy the PORC SYE ($175 shipped) and then get an XJ front driveshaft (from an AW4:auto tranny) and put it on. A lot cheaper than anything else available. You could always do the hack and tap. Here's a couple links, no particular order:

so let me get this straight, the main purpose of the sye is to make up for the loss of length of the driveshaft due to the steeper angle? so if that is the case all i will have to get is a sye for the rear and a longer drive shaft for the front and possibly a 1'' t-case drop?

Not quite, the SYE is shorter and stronger, being shorter makes the angle less.
The front shaft should be ok, but you need a longer one to use with the SYE in the rear.
You can get the longer rear drive shaft by using a front one out of a Automatic XJ.

Ive got a 98 with a rustys 3" full leaf pack. I did the transfercase drop and I'm vibe free. I got the lift and tires and rims as a package deal for a grand. The only thing is that the rear sits at 3.5 inches and the front is at 3, but when I ordered it I thought I had a D35 but I really have a 8.25 so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I'd say check it out bc its a good deal and its not crappy.

Just my 0.02.
