242 V 231

Aight, got in a discussion at work about part time and full time 4x4. What exactly is the diiference (on the inside). What's in the 242 allows you to be in 4x4 all the time without tearing the case up like in the 231 on pavement. Is is a power split (like in AWD cars)? School my ignance.
 
There are clutches for the front drive which allows it to slip when you turn and all that happy stuff.
RWD power would be constant.

This is incorrect.

There is a differential in the the NV242 that allows the power to be differentiated front to rear. When the case is in part time mode this differential is locked. In full time mode it is open (obviously).

The NV242 does not use any clutches.

This system is more or less the same type of system as used in the non-electronic transaxles in Subarus. I can't speak to other AWD brands, I only know Subes.

The NV242 is a good "little" case. I like the flexibility it provides.

Perciate it! Thats what I thought, but wasn't sure. We have a project AWD Talon at work (we are his sponsor). He was in getting some work done and I brought up the topic of "AWD" cherokee for racing. I mentioned using the 242 but wasn't sure if it functioned the same way as other AWD's (split power). :lecture:
