242 Tom Woods Help?

I live in the Aurora area of Colorado about 30 min Southeast of Denver and wanted to do a tom woods driveshaft and SYE install on my 1997 Jeep Cherokee. However, I am not very mechanically inclinded when it comes to the transfer case and crap like that.

Was wondering if anybody here has installed one before, has experience or would be interested in giving a fellow Jeeper some help? :-D Somebody told me a good bribe is to buy the helper a case of beer of their choice.

So if anyone's interested and wants some free booze or would be willing to share some info I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
 
Sorry buddy, not too many people with alot of experience with the 242 - most swap out to the 231 before modding the 242.

Keep bumping this every once in a while. Someone will probably be able to help you eventually. I could prolly do it ..... if I had ANY time, but I've never opened a 242 - just 231's.
 
That's what I figured.

Seeing as how there aren't too many aftermarket parts for the 242... I am rather bummed.

I was just hopin for somebody that had a little experience and was willing to help haha.

I'm running a 242 with a T.W. SYE. It isn't too bad of an install. Do you have the parts, or just researching?

I don't have the parts.

I'm thinking about ordering them and trying it myself.

Only kicker is, I put the rusty's longarm kit on, and it's gonna take me at least a day and a half to get all the shit off to get to the tcase haha.

But I can do it. Hopefully. Just worried about what might happen once I get the transfer case out on the workbench :-/
 
Well, it seems that if you have the mechanical aptitude to install a long arm lift kit and that kind of modification, you should be able to handle the t-case mod since there's detailed instructions with those kits.

You'll need to invest in a decent snap ring plier set. And you should try to arrange to have another set of hands available to help hold various parts of the t-case when you are trying to put the case halves back together - getting the halves together is usually the worst part of the install.

If you haven't already, do some searches here and on-line, I'm sure there's some write-ups on this mod floating around. Colorado4x4.com is another good place to do a search.

If you have big hands like me, it really helps to pull the case out though ;)
 
I have to admit. For my first Lift.

....Or, first mechanical work on my Jeep ever lol, I am rather impressed with my ability to do it.

Don't get me wrong, it's just a whole bunch of nuts and bolts with some lifting, and the occasional grinding and hammering lol... so it's not really rocket science.

However, I have read the install instructions for the TW cv conversion kit and all that jazz, but it seems like it leans more towards the 231. Not to mention a lot of the terminology that is involved with the inside of the tcase and the tcase itself is a bit much for my liking.

But, when I started out with the Jeep. I didn't know what a control arm was haha. So I guess I'll do some reserach and read around. Hopefully something will pop out somewhere.

I will have to post up some pictures of the jeep soon. I have to bleed the brake lines and install the jks sway bar disconnects. Then I'll actually be able to back it out of the darn garage.

i had a 242 and a 231 open side by side last weekend.....they look a little different on the inside, but are basically the same parts in the same locations. very similar. just follow the 231 instructions, and you won't have any issues.

to be honest, when i got my tom woods SYE a few years back, all he sent me was instructions for the 231

Congrats Scott I just started my first jeep as well! I did the rear main seal and an re 3.5” lift. It took a week and wasn’t so bad. I am doing a t-case swap this weekend but both are np231’s

Well, I ordered the TW kit and DS this afternoon.

Seems like that's the best thing out there, and my Jeep is precious to me... So when it comes to driveline angles and tcases and what not, I want to make sure I don't go halfway.

Hopefully the install won't be too bad. I think I'm just going to go ahead and take the tcase out, lay it on the workbench and have at it.

As YELLAHEEP mentioned, i will go ahead and look into a snap ring plier set. This weekend I am going to work on finishing cutting off the orig. control arm brackets. And then next weekend the surgery begins.

As soon as I am all finished I will post pics up of everything. Next thing to do after all this is trim. :eek: That'll be fun haha.
 
Sorry, no pics- but when you get it apart, look real close at the planetary assembly. The planet gear pins are tacked to the planetary case. Those welds like to break and things go downhill from there. If you see any signs of cracking, v-notch and reweld the pins.
