242 Hd Sye?

but does anybody know if you can swap an Advance Adapters Atlas T-case in for a np242? my 242 has a 21 spline short front input on a 1990 XJ.

Yeah, I am thinking a 242 AMG Main Shaft, cut and resplined, with the tail cone off the HD 241 SYE.

Could you just run a Hummer 242 main shaft and cut it like a RE SYE hack and tap or better yet, cut thread the end of the shaft to except a yoke nut like a MIT SYE. No need for any resplining. Use the stock 242 Speedo housing with a RE seal housing ( or a 96+ housing that already has the seal in it ) and the yoke and speedo collar from a JB HD kit?

If you have a 96+ 242 already, you would only need a Hummer main shaft, cut and threaded to length, and JB kit for the yoke and speedo collar.

Here you see the MIT kit for a 231 showing the stock shaft that they cut and then thread the end of to hold the spicer standard yoke in place. Thought maybe you could do the same to the end of the Hummer shaft after cutting it.

I don't think that would work. I don't believe the stock speedo housing will work with the larger AMG Shaft. This is why you get a new housing with the HD 231 kits...Which is why you would need the 241 housing.

You are Halfway there. You would need the AMG main shaft, chain, front output. I think those are the necessary parts for the swap. What you need from the AMG case I think is listed in that thread previously posted. Then have the AMG shaft cut down and then threaded for the yoke. Add a HD 241 Speedo Housing and Speedo collar, and that should be it. It should look something like this when it's done.

P.S. Forgot to mention this, as far as I know, Tera Flex is working on a 4:1 for the 242. "Call us for details on using our low-range gearing in 241 and 242 transfer cases."

When I picked up my 32 tooth gear at the dealer they said the 32 didn't show for any jeep applications, just trucks.

I guess that is my opportunity to make an ASS of my self by assuming that since they list it for Dakotas it will fit the Dakota 242 the same way it fits mine, after thinking about it it could be on a 2wd application or anything, was assuming they would use it the same way I am. Duh, my shit is always different/never the easy path. I still loved the 242 full time driving to work on our icy crap of a highway this morning. I was really hoping it would work cause it would be cheaper and easier to find. There I go hoping for both good and easy in the same wish again.
Gotta stop doing that.

So anyway all these references to the Hummer unit, shafts and stuff, is the Dakota the same? Way easier to locate.

the 242 was an option on some Durangos, but i dont think the dakotas have full time.

i would bet you could find a hummer 242 way easier/cheaper than you could find one from a durango. all hummer h1s have the 242 and only a handful of durangos have them.

they are on ebay all the time for $100. thats how i got mine.

The Hummer does not use the NV242HD, it uses the NV242AMG.

That being said, don't ask me what the specific differences are. AFAIK they both have internal coolers and that is about all I "know". The torque ratings are different: AMG = 3173N.m, HD = 2750N.m

I'm going to guess the output shafts and/or number of planets in the planetary gears is different.

This is a real product that has been out there for a several years now. At least I have seen multiple posts from people that have them. MJR has one IIRC.

You ship Tera the front case half, it comes back modifed and ready to run. I dunno what they do to it, probably some machining and pressing in the new outer gear set.

The idea of 4:1, AMG strength and FT/2wd selectability really turns my crank. Thinking about sticking this in my YJ if I ever get to it.

Just got word from JB conversions on why they dont make a HD kit for the 242 or if there was one in the pipeline. His reply today was:"I know some people need it but at the moment we have some products higher on the list to take care of. We don’t get many inquiries for it. If I had regular weekly calls requesting it, then we would look at it."

I'll agree with that. With Tom Woods selling his for $900 a pop (with the returnable core of course). I paid $500 something for my AA HD SYE and TW DS. You can get the HD SYEs for around $200 now. Even if they sold the 242 unit at $300 it'd still be less then Tom Woods's core charge.

I do wish I had a 242, I'd have plenty of motivation to put together what we have come up with here.

Yep, that's why in order to transfer the AMG parts there is some "tom foolery" that has to be done to modify the AMG shifting mechanism to get 2WD.

Whelp, I can't speak to that. I've seen people post on here that they have them installed. I guess without having exact proof in front of you it comes down to credibility of the poster versus the magazine. My interpretation of what was posted may have been wrong, but I don't think so. I'll try to scare up the post(s).

Can anyone spell the differences between the RE Hack and Tap, Tom Woods and the MIT SYE for the 242?
I know the RE I have to cut the output shaft myself plus drill and tap, which is no big deal, and Tom Woods's pre 96 they do it for you but everything else is exactly the same including the flange used? The MIT is the only one as far as I know that uses a yoke for the pre 96's and cut the thread at the end of a stock shaft but is there anything else different for the extra $200 over a RE one? Any other SYE out there for the 242 for the pre 96's as seems no HD version is coming soon so have to use something in the mean time?

I have a Currie Ent. 242 SYE in my 242. Although mine is the newer 96+ style for my 97, at the time I purchased it they also had the pre96 version as well.
If someone made a 242 HD kit, I would grab one up in a second!!

btw, (on my 87 XJ) I lifted it back in 1990 and it has never had vibes with it's 242 so I left it without converting to a SYE. 16 years later and still going strong.
