The quick and dirty...my tires are from the 80's and show signs of dry rot...rather than spend the $350 - $450 for new tires I thought I would look for a good set of used wheels\tires for around the same price...found a set of AR 16x8's with 235/70/16 Firestone Destination A/T's and am wondering if they will fit on my stock 97 XJ with minimal or no rubbing...

Are you going to lift it anytime soon? If so, I would just hold off and get some 31's from www.treadwright.com . I only say that because you are on this site and will want to lift and get bigger tires soon. So buying those 235's will be a waste.

A lift is in the future, not the immediate future, and I figured I would upgrade my stock rims at the same time...

YJ, how do you calculate tire size?

the size of a tire in metric dimensions go like this:

A/B/C

A) the width of the tire in milimeters
B) the percentage of the sidewall vs. the width
C) the diamter of the wheel needed to fit

A x B = side wall hieght (SWH) ie. 235x.7=164.5 mm

1mm=0.039370079in

(SWH x 2 x 0.0394) + C = total tire hieght

ie 164.5 x 2 x .0394 = 12.9626 + 16 = 28.9626in (about 29 :D)

they'll fit no prob. i put brand new 30x9.50's on mine, and they only rubbed if i had a ton of weight in the back and hit a huge bump. they actually didn't even rub when i was offroad!

ok, slight change of plans, by chance I stumbled upon a set of 265/75/16 Dueller AT's for $100 (too good a deal not to buy)...so, using YJ's formula (actually I'm lazy and I went to renegadestangs link), I get 31's...

now, I'm pretty sure this is not going to fit so my question is will a simple 2" budget lift allow me to run these until I save enough to get a bigger lift?

Renegade, what's your wheel BS? I have read a dozen posts on backspacing and have seen anywhere from 4.5" to stock 5.25" BS with and without rubbing...I think I will be safe with a 16x8 with 4.5" BS

When I went wheelin' with the 33's, they were on stock steelies (5.25" BS). They're now on Soft 8's with 4.5" BS, let's just say they don't tuck anymore. LOL
