231 speedo plug different on 97

i swapped out the 242 for a 231. the 231 is from a 97. The speedo plug is bigger then the one on the 242.
Is there a plug conversion that i can plug in the old one to make the 97 one work?
or do i need to go to a JY and snip the plug off and splice it?
