Almost looks like a yota rearend on it. Im guessing its got 4.30 gears because the engine is a 2.0L or 2.2L. Pretty neat, im gonna guess the hatch is metal now?

EDIT: Just realized the first pic, the front has a hubcap, while the rear has no hubcap LMAO.

I like it. The Chinese have given the exterior and interior a more contemporary look while maintaining the XJ's basic shape. IFS will make it handle better on the street but won't be good for rockcrawling. It's hard to judge the build quality from the pics and it's likely that the Chinese used cheap plastics for the door panels and dash, but at that price who cares?
It's a bargain and I'm happy that the Chinese are keeping the XJ alive. Maybe we should persuade their marketing guys to build an export model with a 4.6L I6. :D

Although I would love to see a revival of the xj, Based on what I saw when I visited china, I'm gonna bet on the quality as being very cheaply made. I also doubt it would pass safety inspection here now.

The rearend looks Asian for sure. 4.30 gears?

Thats kinda my guess.

I don't think the hatch is metal, I'm almost certain its fiberglass, the curves are just too complex to stamp out.

I think thats a safe bet it has a yota rear end, BAW also makes 90s 4 runners still, and likely has the tooling to make other yota parts. I suspect the front IFS is probably yota derived as well.

I like the aesthetics as well.....with the exception of the 5 slot grill, but oh well.

it would be interesting to drive this IFS cherokee and then drive a normal XJ, compare them side by side would be an interesting experience.

Would be cool to import one without a drivetrain, throw US stuff into it, and have a "new" XJ...though probably titled as a 2000 or something.

Well to put it in perspective, US cherokees would not pass safety standards in 2002(hence the KJ) and niether would the exploder(new model in 2002). Essentially stricter crash standards are what killed the XJ for the US market.

I'd run that IFS on the rocks, if the axles and diff gears are strong enough. Look at the great ground clearance with no pumpkin. Ultra4 has sort of dispelled the theory that IFS won't work in rocks. Would be fun to give it try. Although, when Jeep goes to IFS we all won't like it.

Nice that the XJ is still alive, somewhere.

I caught the mirror too

Anyone else think those seats look super uncomfortable

I really don't know what to say as I am at a loss for words. On one hand, I am glad that the XJ is still alive, but on the other, really disappointed where my country is right now.

It is sad that daily we discontinue solid reliable vehicles because they do not meet "current EPA mandates". I know that clean air is important, but lets be realistic. Let's face it, they got rid of the 4.0 because it wouldn't meet future EPA mandates. There wasn't any reason in the world why Chrysler (the HEMI experts) couldn't design a hemispherical combustion chamber head to work on this solid reliable workhorse of an engine. In addition, the fact that high pressure common rail EFI was just beginning to make itself known was simply ignored.

Don't even get me going on the "cash for clunkers" program that spent millions of hard earned tax-payer dollars to take good solid American-built vehicles (including lots of XJ's) out of existence. To me this was the most ridiculous waste of money, -used vehicles are a valuable resource, both in terms of replacement parts, -and running vehicles that are inexpensive to own (no payments, no interest). The government spent millions of dollars to take valuable vehicles out of existence so that people could get a check written by the US taxpayers to go buy a new KIA, Nissan, or Toyota, -yeah, that makes a lot of sense, -doesn't it?

I certainly don't want to rant about politics on the forum, but some things simply deserve mentioning.

Just wait until the day when China begins manufacturing solid reliable vehicles that DO meet current safety standards, -that day will soon be coming folks.......

The times are a changin'...........

Our standards eliminate building stuff here in our country, so a country like China, who is a gross polluter when it comes to manufacturing, builds stuff making more pollution than we would have. And, many times we buy it!!!

Agreed. There are a lot of things contributing to this country "putting itself out of business" -it has been something that has been going on for many years, -it didn't just happen yesterday. The EPA has made it so cost prohibitive for certain industries to stay alive in the states that it is no wonder companies like Caterpillar, Honda, and many others have taken manufacturing elsewhere. Let's not even mention the fat bloated labor unions sucking the life out of the American auto industry........

One positive thing (at least for this very moment in time), GM is the #1 brand in China right now. The US is exporting more GM vehicles to China than anywhere else in the world.

I'm not saying that factory emissions didn't need to be tightened up here, -it's just that when you have these third-world countries that don't have to comply with diddly-squat competing for global manufacturing, -well, you get the point.

Seeing the classic lines of the XJ being made in a country like China makes me happy, and yet sad at the same time.

Caterpillar just closed an Electro-Motive plant in London Ontario because it's highly skilled, unionized, employees refused to take a pay cut from $35 to $16.50/ hour. As much as I'd like to rant about the EPA it's worth noting that some of these corporations are a-holes that would pollute the whole damn continent and work everyone into slavery if they had the chance to save a few bucks.

Chrysler made a bone-head move scrapping the XJ, but it's not fair to blame the government for that its misfortune. I don't see any reason why the Cherokee couldn't be redesigned to meet new standards.

I agree. Daimler screwed things up with all the weird models to replace the XJ.
