2008 Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel 6.7 Engine in an XJ??

I will have to look at the 5.9. Seems a smaller engine. I took a look at the 4BT, but it is rather low on HP (130 HP). I kicking around the idea of a diesel, but a package deal--engine, wiring harness (with ECU), and maybe transmission. Makes the swap much easier. Yeah, I know about the 6.9 emissions. A bit much. Anyone have any other considerations for a diesel somewhere between the 4BT and the 6? I will have to check into the 5.9. I think I have a manual on it somewhere.

Thanks
I believe that with a few mods, you can hit mid-200hp-ish with a 4bt. What are you planning on doing with this exactly? They have gobs of tq, just need a little more top end.
If anything, go pick up a cheap, used step van with a 4bt. And pull everything out.

I think I'm about to embark on the 4bt swap in my 99, and yeah, you can tune them for plenty of power. Reading yesterday, 220hp without modifying the injector plates from a VE pumped 4bt is realistic, provided you have the right turbo and an intercooler. Keep in mind, that as you tune up the HP through more fuel/air, you also tune up the torque -- a stock 130hp 4bt has @330lb/ft of torque -- a 220hp version may be shredding your drivetrain with excess torque (unless your doing some serious upgrading there as well!)...

Yeah, that is an interesting question--how much torque can the XJ frame/drivetrain handle? I can upon this yesterday with a modified JK from 505 Performance. Take a look.

Well.. frame stiffeners and a cage might help a bit. As far as the drivetrain goes, you would have a different trans/t-case at the least. So with that would you probably want better driveshafts and built axles.

I think everyone on here is dumb and you should listen to your mechanic....I mean, he is a mechanic after all. What do these internet guys know? It will fit, it will work, as a matter of fact, I'm sure if you call advance adapters, they can make you a set of motor mounts. Maybe even an adapter for the transmission! I say go for it! When you're done, maybe take your lawn mower to the same guy....see if he'll swap out the wimpy 5hp Briggs motor for a Lexus LFA motor...that would be awesome!!!!!!

There is so much fail in this post.

I'm sure your local mechanic knows all about swapping 6bts into Cherokees, it's a pretty common thing after all. I bet that putting 3/4 ton diesel truck engines into compact SUVs is part of their certification anyways.

There is more fail there than a Cherbear post!

Its very common, I have 7 of them. :laugh3:

It was just an entertaining thought. Afterall, if we never dreamed or explored, shit...we would have never left the cave. Anyway, I think a 3.0 CRD would be more appropriate. Pull one out of a newer Grand and retro-fit it into the XJ. I think that is something that would work. Plus, it is a newer model engine with a fair amount of parts support.

I wonder what the tuning capabilities are on the 3.0 CRD??

Hmm....

What?? A 1.9l turbodiesel?? Why bother?
More power than the 2.5, or 2.8. Excellent mpgs. Diesel is available ore widely than gas in most of the world.

Oh, and unlike the 6bt, it'll actually fit in a XJ...

I suppose, but I am thinking more and more about this 3.0 CRD. Still really new on the market so I am sure they can't be too many in the boneyards. They were used in the Grand Cherokee and the Mercedes 3.0. I took a look at the specs. Rather nice, but still not going to be easy to find one soon. Maybe a project down the road?

Possible.

I had a funny dream about a diesel in a Jeep. One of the marine engineers here (who does pro-drag racing) ran it by me too. But after doing the numbers, it just doesn't fit. I wish made something between the 4bt and the 6bt. I will stick with my 4.9 stroker. I think that is enough to play around with for now.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, where's that 5BT when you need one?
The Full Size Jeep boys like the 4BT. That's big enough. In an XJ, you are gonna want a real frame under anything bigger. And, of course, you don't have one - a frame that is.
