My wifes grand cherokee thru a dtc and I scanned it, it was U0404. Invalid data from control module gear shift. Does anyone know exactly what this means? Is there a different scan tool for the transmission control unit that I can buy? Or does anyone know of a site that lists codes and solutions? My scanner is th Actron Cp9145.

Thanks

So im told the Grand needs a new shifter bezel assembly, and its not covered under my warranty. Quoted $369 parts and labor. The warranty says it covers "Transmission: (Automatic and Manual) All internal componets,. The following parts are also covered: tourque converter, electronic control units, oil cooler, tranmission mounts, seals and gaskets. Note: transmission case housing, and oil pans are only covered if damaged by the failure of an internal transmission part." Is a shifter bezel not a electronic control unit or a part thereof? What do i exactly have to do to fix this?

Thanks

i had a service writer go through this very same issue with the same vehicle at our dealership. it took a lot of arguing back and forth with the warranty people. they finally caved, admitting that the bezel contains electronics, and that the electronics were the problem. it "should" be covered. we call this particular writer "the bulldog", he has never once failed to get a customer their rightful warranty. good luck!

If you have a binding or broken upper bezel, or a concern with the electronic shifter module (ESM), It is no longer necessary to replace the complete transmission shifter as an assembly. Please refer to Service Bulletin 21-016-06 issued July 2006 that provides a serviceable top PRND bezel part numbers for the shifter assembly. The ESM comes with this bezel assembly. as per the tsb....
