So, my ole ladies WJ had an oil leak when we first bought it a while back, turned out to be a valve cover gasket leaking. I replaced the gasket and the oil leak seemed resolved, she took it on an extended road trip and showed no signs of oil leaking.

Recently I've asked her to keep an eye on the oil level and check it once in a while just to be sure. She got to work and checked it and said the oil level was barely showing up on the dipstick. I told her to add 1 quart, check it and add another quart if needed. Well, she added an entire 5 quart bottle and drove it home...

When she got home and I found out what happened, I checked the level and it was way above the full line so I went ahead and drained the oil to refill it proper. I measured 7 quarts that came out of it, it seriously shocked and scares me that if she added 5 to it and I only got 7 out of it...

I refilled it, added UV dye and she drove it a few days and I checked it with the black light and don't see a single drop of oil anywhere and the level is right where I left it on the dipstick. Nowhere that I can see looks like any recent oil leak, everything is bone dry under it.

Now, I am wondering where the oil vanished to that it was barely showing on the dip stick and could it have really been running on just 2 quarts of oil. It seems fine now, the oil that came out was dirty but nothing overwhelming and seems to run just fine. I run a Napa Gold 1085 and it holds a decent amount of oil so maybe it had closer to 3 quarts, based on what I drained out of it.

My initial thought is that she misread the low oil level, over filled and it puked out the excess oil somewhere but I don't see where it could have done so. Other thought is maybe worn rings but she said it never smokes, I drove with her today and didn't notice anything either.

I am really scratching my head on this one, any advice?
