2000 XJ value

Looking for advice on selling my my 2000 XJ 2-door. It developed a nasty engine knock a few years ago. I've been unable to get a local shop to accurately diagnose it and come up with a plan to fix it. Everyone just says put a new engine in it, but nobody wants to do a rebuild. I finally bought a new 2-door Wrangler, and am looking to sell the XJ which I haven't driven in several years. (Keeping my forever '93 XJ 2-door, though). The 2000 has a good body except for rusty floors; the seats are badly worn. What could I expect to get for it? Thanks
 
A rusty, worst build year, that needs a motor with bad interior? Price is highly dependent on location, but i could buy that set up for 5 to 800 all day long here in kansas. 1k if it was a 91-98.
 
Actually the body is very good except for the floors which are readily replaceable. I just haven't been able to find a good local mechanic who wants to fix the engine.
 
No one wants to fix the engine because it will cost you more to do a rebuild than put in a used/reman engine.

How many miles on it? I'd say you be lucky to get a $1000, but I'm not familiar with the Anchorage market for XJs. Might be different than the lower 48.
 
The problem for me with remanufactured engines is the shipping to and from Alaska. The last mechanic I took it to suggested a little troubleshooting might find a simpler fix; now I'm hundreds of dollars in debt to him and he says get a reman...
 
Ok say you spend $5k to have someone rebuild the engine. Currently the value is ~$1k. You'd have to sell it for over $6k to make it worth it. You're probably not going to sell it for $6K with rusted out floors. But again that depends on mileage. Maybe could get $6K if its low miles...but you still have rusted out floors. If it has over 200K on the clock just take it to the junkyard. I have a hard time seeing how you paying someone to fix it will be worth it for you. Even if you throw a reman in, its not going to be worth more than the $1K plus whatever you spent on having someone throw in the reman ($3-4K).

The only options that would make sense to me is take the $1k you could get for it as is or watch some Youtube videos on how to fix it yourself. These are pretty easy engines to work on with basic hand tools. There are tons of Youtube video explaining exactly what to do. Probably just needs a set of bearings or has a broken piston. The 4.0L is a great engine to learn on.
