Please let me know, i need this fix asap......

Could be anything --- loose gas cap (dried out seal), loose or cracked vac hose, etc. I would look to those first.
Looks like in CALIF it is illegal to have a scanner ??? One of my mechanic
friends told me last month --- do not know if that is totally true yet ?
Still thinking of buying one, so the shop and I would be on the right page going into a fix/repair. AutoZone in my area will not scan any longer.

At least knowing up front would help. You would need the code sheet also.

You might have to find a place that will scan/read it for $25. In CA everyone wants $65-95 to scan .....

If you have a smart phone you can buy one off eBay that reads to your phone via Bluetooth and its only $20 'thecaptain' has one and it's pretty cool and looks to be well worth the money!

Ive never herd of anything like that, and like Tone said I have a elm327 bluetooth dongle paired to a nexus tablet that can read my codes, coolant temp and everything else

That wouk d be great man..I want to learn as much as possible from other xj owners...eventhough I bought a small simple scanner. It was able to pull two codes P0303 and P0455. ...

I just found out that autoparts can't scan them anymore....

the first code is a misfire for cyl 3, the other code is a massive evap system leak (which would go along with your high NOx numbers from the smog test. usual suspects there are the gas cap (just put a new one on it they're cheap), a broken vacuum line, or a leak in the check valve on the fuel pump module. gas cap is the easy and cheapest thing to fix so start there. the misfire could be anything from a bad plug to a failing coil pack.

autoparts stores can't scan the car for you anymore by law because it led to mis diagnosis and employees talking people into parts they didn't need just to make more commisions. the BAR put a stop to that a couple of years ago.

The funny thing is that the light comes on only after an X amount of starts..

I took it for a re test today..and it pass with flying colors....I believe it was a vacuum leak and the spark plugs..I also did seafoam and cleaned th AIV
