Hey guys i just got my uncles 2000 Jeep cherokee classic with the 4.0L as a graduation present. I really want to make it sound better but im not sure what is the best sounding muffler. I have heard flowmaster 40 and flowmaster 44. Are those good to get and do you recommend anything else? Also should i get cats or no?

i run a Gibson rear exit. I like an angled tip, not much for anything else. It tucks up nice and tight, but then i'm running stock shackles with 5" Betts leaf springs. Lift shackles might pose a slight inconvenience. The main can has been whacked pretty good twice, and she's holding up fine. I bought the full stainless one (which somehow has rust, BS!!!), but i'm overall pleased with the durability and fit.

I have a Gibson as well. I only went with it because I got a good deal on it. I too was a bit dismayed that the pipes started to rust. I contacted Gibson about it and they said its a grade of stainless that will develop surface rust, but it warranted against rust through. Still, part of the attraction of a SS exhaust is the no rust part. The muffler does hang a bit low as it is round, not oval.

If you're looking for no rust stainless you want 304. Most systems are made with 409. I know Borla uses 304. I use a Magnaflow muffler it sounds great.

im running full 2.5 with cat delete into a flowmaster 40 and turndown. sounds great but a little too loud. need to have a tail pipe made to have it exit out rear and quiet it down some

A few weeks ago, I bought a Corsa exhaust for a 97-99TJ and put it on my XJ. It is a nice setup, but is more middy/raspy under load than my previous Magnaflow, which is bassy and mellow. I went back to the Magnaflow.

read my post 4.0 tuning exercise phase 1,
I got a brola turbo xl straight through muffler, a random technologies cat, and a flow daddy header.

The result is really phenomenal, both performance and sound wise, it now sounds like a mix between a rumbling v8 and a bmw M inline 6.

the kind of noise that you turn off the stereo and roll down the windows to listen to:)

I got a flow daddy header.

After reading how difficult it was to install the header, wonder if removing the stock header, including the twin cats, and then bolting everything together before re-installing would be easier?
Removing and replacing the header is one of the few things I have not done to my 2001 XJ.

How is the build quality of the Flow Daddy header?

Once i sell the Corsa system, I will try a 2.5" Borla XR-1. A bad coil blew up my Borla catback when it didn't want to fire a second or two, and when it did, the space in the muffler is where the explosion took place. The 2.25"in and 2"out muffler was choking out the 4.6l anyhow, so it was queued to get removed. From my experience with cherokees, the Borla system is the best in quality and sound and worth the money. I still am using the header, even though a 2.5" collector and downpipe would be better suited for the 4.6l.

1) The two precats are not part of the manifold. They are welded to the down pipe and won't un bolt.
2) You can't just remove them as the down stream o2 sensors would notice the cats missing and set a MIL

The way I look at it, the mini-cats are part of the manifold, even if they unbolt from the top half.
Sure looks like a manifold.

My question was if removing the whole assembly and then bolting the new header to the cats would be easier than doing it in the vehicle.
I have no intentions of removing the cats since I plan on continuing to pass smog inspection and testing.
