1999 XJ project

'Tis better to have clearance and not need, than to need and not have. Just my .02

I'll play.. better to have cool engine.. and what's the winch for.. to get you out when you didn't have clearance..

Appearance counts, too, eh?
Just kidding with you.. I want to hear opinions for sure.

While replacing the lift kit with OME/DPG listed above I'll also replace all rubber bushings in stock pieces that remain on the Jeep. I'd like to pre-order so they're ready to go when the big day gets here.

Sway bar bushings
sway bar link bushings

Can you guys help me out with a list? I'm no suspension guru for sure and can't really name the parts I'm looking at other than swaybar, maybe track bar... so I can order them by name.

There will be no poly.

Don't mean to be lazy..

Thanks. You guys have been a big help here.

If you're serious about replacing bushings up front, check out your UCA bushings on the axle. Mine were half eaten through. Kind of a pain to replace, but well worth it.

I'm getting new UCA with the DPG/OME kit. I'm assuming they'll include bushings.

Thanks.

Let me ask a different way:

How much of an airflow/cooling issue is it to have a winch mounted fairly high on the bumper covering the grill/radiator?
I'm looking at JCR winch bumper and AJ's phatXJ winch bumper.

Ok, now I am starting to think maybe I will get more bang for my buck by installing lockers and doing a mild " lift and running some good 30" ATs. The jeep already has a pretty good amount of clearance, and the lockers will keep it out of trouble in just about any situation.

Does anyone have anyone have a 8.25 rear with the Aussie Locker?

I like my DPG 4" OME Hybrid Kit. I’m going to add the JKS shackle to make up for some of the rear sagging that happened after I installed the JCR bumper and tire carrier. I also tow a trailer.

FYI: I just swapped my OME 4 inch rear leaf springs out as I added the rear bumper with tire carrier (80lbs) and 31 inch KM2 (55 lbs), fuel tank skid (75lbs), and a spare part/tool kit (80lbs) in the rear. I had added a total of 290 lbs in the back. It was OK but I also tow a ski boat and I wanted a more weight carrying ablility. I installed the new OME dual rate springs and could not be happier. It sits right now and it holds the weight much better. I wish they had been available when I built my XJ. I worked with Dirk to pick the right ones and we nailed it. Anybody that is adding this kind of weight to their XJ and is buying an OME kit needs to consider paying the extra for these new dual rate springs. They flat work. Now I can have all my stuff and tow the boat and the springs hold it. In addition, I still have my great OME ride.

I am interested in doing exactly the same thing, did you get your parts ordered?

Got the DPG OME rear stuff installed yesterday, minus welding the new shock mounts up. (Had to fight with the son-in-law to convince him it was ok to do that - he's the welder/cutter. He's still not convinced but I got him to play along). Installed most of the from Ultimate kit (UCA/LCA, springs, shocks) today but ran into an issue trying to roll the front diff back to accept the CAs. We set them a the same length as the stock uppers and Rough Country lowers that came out. I'll be calling Dirk tomorrow for some more advice.

Really hoping I can find a good alignment shop in this small town.. only 3 to choose from here. I'm assuming they'll have to remove one end of CA and adjust those as well as the trackbar.

Not a lot of fun doing this but looking forward to the final product. Of course I'll have to tune bump stops front & rear once it's all together.

BTW I did get the dual rate rear springs and told Dirk I'd be adding front winch bumper and XD9000i Warn in the very near future. He adjusted the coil spring order to accommodate. He IS a lot of help but I'd like to see some installation instructions and maybe pictures so I don't have to bother him on the phone... even the simplest stuff can baffle me sometimes.

Gary I would recommend an angle finder for measuring and setting the front pinion angle. I set the difference between the pinion angle and the drive shaft angle at 2.5 degrees that way there is no front driveshaft vibration and I still had the maximum caster for more stable road driving. Then the alignment shop will set your toe in.

You will also use the angle finder for checking your rear pinion angle for the rear SYE.

Just a thought. Your call.

I'll check that out. I have a couple angle finders I've used on my street car w/500HP.. critical on the dragstrip.

Thanks.

Ooops.. when installing control arms remove one s.tocker, replace with aftermarket and so on. Don't make the mistake we made by removing all control arms then wrestling with the diff to get the new ones in place.. d'oh. I'll get pics next chance I get but am off for an elk hunt for the weekend.
