1999 WJ overheating

I just brought back my dad's 1999 WJ 4.7L v8 from North Carolina to Colorado.

It was overheating when pulling a trailer.

The coolant was flushed and replaced prior to the trip.

I know that there are a lot of possible causes for overheating.
However, I wanted to ask specifically about the fan.
From doing a little research, I found that the mechanical fan/electric fan combo in the 1999-2000 WJs had problems with cooling.
Jeep changed the fan to a hydraulic fan in 2001 and those did not have the overheating problem.

I also found some research that indicated that rather that converting to the hydraulic fan system(expensive) that installing a heavy duty clutch would work.

Is there anyone here who has a 1999 or 2000 WJ?
What have you done or found out about the cooling fan problem?

Thanks!

I don't know much about them, but just let me remind you. If it was overheating on the freeway, and at freeway speeds the fan isn't going to be the problem. Something else to consider is the transmission dumping extreme amounts of heat into the cooling system. On my XJ I could litterly watch the temp gauge rise when pulling a long grade, with a trailer in tow, the transmission in OD, and the torque converter unlocked. If I put it down into 3rd and let the torque converter lock up it wouldn't do it.
