1997 XJ, Coil-Over Project - Walker Evans Racing Shocks

Dingo,

I have seen your threat in CARDOMAIN....

I really like your AXLES (front and rear...):patriot:

It seems that it has good articulations.
  1. Is the XJ Raised (front / Rear), if so by how much ?
  2. What is the lenght (free lenght) of the front Coils ?
  3. What is the lenght of travel for all of the shocks ?

Thank you those axles have been in there for about 4 years with ZERO problems.

  1. yes it is lifted, it's around 8" or so total lift, put the front axle has the brackets moved up 2" so i only use 6" coils.
  2. i don't know the free length off hand but they are made by http://rockkrawler.com/ they are listed at 6" and are very soft.
  3. They shocks are Rancho 9000's p/n 9116 front and 9112 rear. Rancho doesn't list the old 9000 p/n anymore so i wnt off the 5000 series shocks for travel length
9116 16.00" compressed 26.25 extended, i use every inch of this, i need longer travel shocks. (i think Coilovers are on the way
9112 14.875 compressed 24.00 extended, they are about 2 inches too long as i moved the shock mounts up even with the axle tubes, i have about 2" of SHOCK uptravel and the rest is droop, works ok, i really need to work on getting shorter shocks in the rear.

If there's anything else i can help you with let me know.

Well, for sure IT IS NOT about COIL-OVERS or Brand Name or whatever,....
it is about "HOW" it is set-it up properly, so that you would benefit and be able to use every single inch that you can....:patriot: :repair:
Very nice.....

:idea: :idea:Hmmmm..., seem everybody that is into Adventure, etc are using 10 to 12 " travel shocks....., what if I replace mine with 10 inch coilover and still have it low-rider for daily...???:idea::idea:

right and that's the point that i'm at right now, i'm at the limits of the stock shock mounting points. so it's time to move the mounts to get a longer shock in there. And i always try and look at the bigger picture, if i have to make shock mounts what's stopping me from making coil over mounts? that's what led me to build the axles. Add new gears, a locker ,upgrade the shafts and brakes and what's left? a housing. if you can buy a D60 housing made to fit for $350 then what's stopping me? that's basically my theory behind wanting coilovers, the best shock you can get is a external resovoir, rebuildable revalvable shock, so why not just get the coil mountin kit and some coils too. keepsfrom trying to fit both a nice shock and a coil in the same cramped space.

BTW that picture was very old, that was before the new rear springs and the longarm here's a better one. And much newer!

  1. Points taken,...
  2. Since you are planning on changing the shocks with a longer one, and you also have to built a new shock mounts, then
  3. Why not plan to fabricate the "NEW" shocks mounts so that you would also able to use it for the "COIL-OVERS" in the near future.
  4. 2" inch body use 2.5" coils, 2.5" body use 3" coils, so prepare the mounting for it...
  5. Makes the mount shocks mounting simple enough..., strong enough, BUT NOT OVERKILL !!! :explosion

the rear sway bar is 16mm, and is completly worthless.
id look for something in the 22-24mm area
You are right, for STREET USE, on-road, high speed cornering it would be too small.

lol not to many people put the rear back on so I had a tough time finding an install but here is a removal write-up

btw if you need the bracket part that bolts onto the u-bolts I have a pair that I can dig out of the trash, if you want them they are yours
Thanks for the link, and thanks for the offer..., however sending it to Jakarta, Indonesia would be very expensive.... :banghead:

Andhi, if i get my jeep running tomorrw im going to try to finish up 2 sets of the brake adaptors, one for me and one for you. Are you able to get the calipers and rotors over there, or would you like me to get you a price for everything as a kit?

take your time...

What kind of rotor and calipers are you using ?
What is the dia size of the rotor (and thickness) ?

the calipers are for a late 70's dana 44 front end, the rotors are a similar size, just with the 5x4.5" bolt pattern. I dont know the sizes because i havent purchased them yet, somewhere around 300mm
