well i've been in the market for a pickup for a little while now and recently saw a 1995 ford f250 v8 5.8 auto 4x4 xl. std. cab with about 170k asking about 2500. i've been looking for something like a chevy 1500 with a 350 in it as i know parts are everywhere and the 350 is an easy engine to work on and such. anyhow i'm looking to do some medium duty towing (my jeep about 5000lbs +trailer) with it on occasion when going wheeling but also use it for my daily driver. i really know nothing about ford's the engine trans t-case or axles and how they hold up gas mileage and so on. So if anyone can shed some light on this i would be forever in your debt.

Sounds like the truck i sold a year ago...best was 11-12MPG downhill with a tailwind and a load of fat chicks.

Make sure it's got the OD trans...mine did not.

My buddy AJ has a 1995 F350 XL with the 5.8(351) in it...The truck has easily over 225000 miles and he uses it to pull his landscaping equipment..He swears by Ford. Only thing he ever complains about is the gas mileage, honestly it gets horrible gas mileage. I think he said he's lucky to get 8-9 in town with the trailer, with out he says he gets around 12 combined mpg... If you can, look for an older Powerstroke like a 1994-98 they were the 7.3L Turbo Diesel and they were strong as hell

Or a 302 (5.0L) V-8. I have an 89 F-250, 2wd, ZF five-speed, 3.55s, and I get 23-24 mpg higway, no cargo/trailer. Plenty of power for towing too. I haven't towed my Jeep yet, but I've towed a 30-foot manlift (~5000 lbs), and my brother tows an enclosed trailer (~3000) every weekend. Does just fine.
