1986 XJ fuel sending unit . . . WHERE ARE THEY???

Greetings all! I'm new to the XJ world, so please bear with me.

I bought a 1986 AMC Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 2.5L TBI for my wife. Turns out, the PO put a fuel sending unit in from a 90s 4.0. So, the fuel tank reads in reverse, and the fuel pressure is too high, overpowers the fuel metering diaphragm, and runs extremely rich. It also has flooded once and left us stranded. Absolutely would not restart because it was flooding fuel into the TB. This is all easy to solve, EXCEPT for the fact that I cannot find a year appropriate sending unit anywhere.

Where are you all finding sending units?

Am I just going to have to deal with modifying this 90s sending unit to work as much as possible?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Fuel tank.

I'm just curious. Why the sarcasm to this guy? He asked where can he find a sending unit for his XJ.

Am I missing something? Serious question.
My bad. Fixed.

My FSM and Haynes manual are both showing the same style gauge float for both the TBI & MPI. There is a slight difference in the fuel pump, and retaining bracket at the top of the pump for the TBI unit.

ETA,
It may only be a crossed wire affecting the way the gauge is reading.

I thought Renix and HO fuel senders were indeed backwards, with low resistance meaning empty on one and full on the other. I don't recall which was which. Isn't the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail on both?

I think the answer here is installing the correct fuel pump and fuel level sensor.

Yes, sir. They are reversed. Mine now shows empty at full and full at empty.

Sorry to miss the replies. I appreciate it.

Still have not found one. Just dealing with the reversed guage at this point.

What really bugs me is I saw a YouTube video once where a fella bought a middle that reversed the sending unit polarity and sent proper signal to the guage, but I can't remember what video or find it.

HS2246736 CarQuest I have been running mine for 4 years. The hanger is really what I wanted, I figure if the pump goes out I'll just replace it with a quality pump. The fuel level works fine in a 20 gallon tank not in the 13.5 gallon. I dropped my tank at least 5 times moving the float to get it set right never did, when I put the 20 gallon tank in I bent the float back to factory and have been fine since. It has about 25 miles left when the low level light comes on and stays on. I have an 88.

The 88 has a different range than the 86.

86 should be E=73 ohms F=10 ohms.

88 should be E=220 ohms F=20 ohms.

At least, that's what I find when searching, which I've done a lot of and never found the proper sending unit.

Are you needing the whole Fuel sending unit or just the lower pressure fuel pump? I understand that having the right year parts would be ideal to fix both problems but the fuel pressure and running rich I assume are the higher priority issues?

I dont have any experience with the early engines but they are old GM motors I believe. Maybe see if there is some cross compatibility info somewhere of what else that motor was put in and see about getting a fuel pump for that vehicle. Another option is to do an in-line fuel pressure regulator to adjust the pressure down. no?
