ok so i am looking around on craigslist for my little brother a jeep cherokee to but for him. well i came across a 1985 4 cylinder jeep cherokee for $800 it has 140k miles runs/drives and is 4x4.

Will this little cherokee get better MPG than the 4.0? will it be as reliable? and if i wanted to later on add a 3 inch lift and 31s would it turn them 31s off road?

Pm xjintx from the red river chapter if he doesn't chime in. He has a 4 cylinder in one of his xj's that wheels with us. It does pretty well but is also regeared. No clue as better or not as far as gas mileage goes though.

The 85 4 cylinder is carbureted. As far as gas milage, it may only be slightly better than a well tuned 4.0. Is it auto or manual? www.car-part.com is showing 3:73 and 3:31 to be the only gear ratios available that year. Theres no way I would try to run 31's with either of those gears on a 4 cylinder. If you can get it, put a Holley/Weber 2bbl carb on it, and regear or replace the axles to something in the 4-5 range, you might be good. The reliability of the 2.5 is as good as the 4.0 so youre likely covered on that part. Good luck.

My '85 Had 4.10 Gears in it.

and if i wanted to later on add a 3 inch lift and 31s would it turn them 31s off road? It won't like 4hi, but will do fine in 4low.
