'06 Dodge Charger: New Cop Car?

There is a big lawsuit going on by several police depts vs Ford over the crown vic blowing up when they get rear ended [pinto anyone, they have short memories I guess], Ford will NOT sell their crown vics to PD's or govt that has one of these lawsuits in progress or is a signatory involved with it. Thats ticked off more than a few people so the crown vic may be going away. Dont understand why they just don't swap the tank out for a fuel cell and be done with it.
 
I know I'm walking on thin ice here but the original Charger wasn't the prettiest car on the block either.

I like DC's new cars the Magnum and the Charger are cool.

Yella, why would back seat comfort be of concern in a pursuit car? Doesn't California still have some Mustangs left?

I think it was in '00 or '01, NCHP bought each Trooper Barracks a Z28 Camaro for interceptor duty. Also each Barracks got one XJ (phasing into Durangos as they get hi-miles and swapped out.) I have noticed that a lot of the HP unmarked cars are now Chevy Impala 4-doors, but they still are getting Crown Vix as well. :dunno: We have a local Ford store ICW a local 'upfitter' that build a lot of patrol cars. Our county Sheriff's are getting Durangos as well as new Crown Vics.

Saw an Intrepid sheriff's patrol car ride by the other day, unclear from which county (not ours) but for sure the Crown Vic doesn't have an exclusive market.

It probably has lots more to do with budgeting / bidding, than anything.

I think there are still some fox body Mustang interceptor cars out in the deserts, but you don't see those often. The "modern" interceptor are Z28 Camaro's (little bit modified), again you very rarely see them outside of the desert (think long straight roads!).

Funny thing about three weeks ago I saw a Camaro interceptor on the freeway going to work (I live in the city), damn thing had a tractor trailer pulled over!

Not so much "comfort" as simply room to have someone sit safely for transport. Even with the Crown Vics, there's been lots of times I've had to cuff-n-stuff a large guy between the seat and the barrier where his knees are pressed hard into the barrier. Most times, people easily "fall" into the car, but getting them back out becomes the challenge. Plus, there's always the concern over getting into an accident when transporting someone in those tight confines.

But you're right, both the Magnum and the Charger would make great traffic cars for cities and State Patrol units. It's just that a bit more room would make for a well rounded patrol vehicle.

The Intrepids are decent cars and have nice rear pass. room. Problem is the front drive trannys just don't hold up to the abuse - and for some odd reason, the bigger brake system Dodge made for the Police package kept catching fire after hard driving/pursuit situations. Some of the first fleet issued Police Intrepids actually burned to the ground. From what I understand, DC has made a fix for this, but now have dropped the Intrepid from Police fleet sales.

These reasons are why my dept. is reducing the number of Crown Vics in favor of Tahoes. Yeah, they ain't much for pursuits, but much safer and roomier. And of course, the current legal trend isn't supporting Police pursuits so that's directly influencing the kinds of cars being outfitted for police duty.

Yep, that's what we got locally. Also a few Exploders, a new 05' stang, and a few others can't remember off the top of my head. The impala is damn nice. We had one in the shop for some work. It had a super charger on it :).
 
I remember hearing about the 8 24's, 8 on the road/24 in the shop, they ran out west, most were 426 supercharged hemi furys that would run between cities in nevada and new mex, crank em up to 120+ and hold em there till the next fuel stop then at the end of the shift they'd pull the engine and drop in a overhauled one and prep the car for the next run. They used to check those big empty hiways for breakdowns and accidents. Was going from sdiego to las vegas on a 3 day weekend with my room mate for his brothers batch party. We were in his new renegade when one went by us, about sucked the decals off the hood... we were stopped for a piss break and it took him about a mile to stop then turn around and come back to see if we needed help...the thing I remember most was the whine of that jimmy poking thru the hood..

Up here in sacramento area, they have quite a few camaros runnign 80 and 50. see a few of them most every day. They also have a black stealth one, they use to catch street racers at night. guy in my shop class a few years back got nailed by it.
 
The front of that car look a little like the Nissan Skyline R34 to anyone else?

Actually now that you pointed it out it does, the headlights are just a little taller. It'll never be in the same league as a skyline though.
 
Most of the Camero's are used specifically for trucks. They're known as "polar bears" They're hard to make out & identify as CHP because they're not black & white & the LED light bar on top is hard to spot. They can hide behind other traffic really easy & sneak up on you. In our area they're used almost exclusively for trucks.
