i was running a truss, solid cover and the 2 were tied into one another. i ran 36x13.5 iroks on this for a year and a half. stock carrier and a lockright in it. i eventually toasted the gears but never had axle shaft failures. i think with a full case locker i would have been fine.

A big reason my d30 held up was there was no flex in the housing at all and short of a girdle cover it was not going to flex and break parts.

The d30 is all about luck, i never babied mine. Also the Irok's do kinda suck in the mud. Notice the second vid, silverxj the hill was still sandy. The first vid, me it had been raining all night. It was a fun climb...
First XJ, my XJ was running a D30 with 4.56 gears with 36" iroks and stock shafts. 8.25 rear. Lock right front and welded rear.
The ring and pinion is the weak link in the d30.

with 33's i think stock shafts and some 760 spicer joints are plenty. I ran 36's for 2 years very hard and never had a shaft failure. I did go through 1 ring gear and one pinion though with 4.56 gears. My axle was trussed though, i think that helps a bit with deflection causes unseen issues...
Truly its going to flex only as well as your setup allows. Arms, track bar, steering.
3.5" RE superflex kit.
Same lift with my LA kit, thats a 36" tire for comparison
