Just got home from the Badlands. Had a great time. The weather couldn't have been better. No rain until after we were on the road home too. Took my rockcrawler scorpion out in the quarry and was quite impressed with what it would do. Nice to meet you XJ4Life.
How about splicing into the sender wires on the t-stat housing? Could I do that instead of trying to get this broken piece out of the back of the head? Is there another suitable location to put the sender for the gauge?
If you dont have the disconnect, your seals should be on the tubes where they meet the diff. Heres a great write up on how to replace.

Luckily or unluckily depending on how you look at it, the sensor base that is still in the block is made of brass so its pretty soft. I doubt an easy will break in brass but I guess its possible. Thanks for the tip on a reverse drill bit. I might have to give that a shot.
Its been my experience that you should replace both the master and slave at the same time. Especially if you have an external slave. If you get them at the same time usually they will come with fluid in them and you won't have to worry about bleeding. It shouldn't take you more than 10 mins...
