Transmission Slipped So I Pulled the Engine (Lots of Pics)

Mesh,

Looks like new. I cannot wait till I start my rebuilds of the AW4 and the 242. Keep the updates and pics coming.

MoparManiac,
Definately let us know what kit they use. I have seen all kinds and kinda unsure which one to by. I saw this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AW4-...011QQitemZ320219621120QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
Let me know what you guys think of this kit. The seller said it does not come with a filter though.

Thanks,
Silent

The transfer case is now apart. I had a little problem removing the roll pin in the shift rail it didn't want to budge, I went through two #1 screw extractors and wasted a day messing with it so I drilled it out.

Some pointers for success when rebuilding something.

Do your homework take the time to do it correctly find a good manual. If it's something you've never done before maybe spend a few weeks researching until you're comfortable doing the job. I don't like to cut corners or save every penny filters are cheap I personally replace filters when I work on things.

Transfer case is done had no real problems. I'm very happy with how it turned out looks new no slop in the chain and very smooth action.

The transmission should be more involved I'll probably start a new thread for it and include a ton of pictures. Starting transmission friday.

First picture, if you think it was clean before you are wrong. I did a second more thorough cleaning on all the parts after being disassembled. I Already put in some bearings and seals.

New chain looks great probably my favorite part.

All closed up basically done. You may notice the seal missing on the extension housing I'm waiting on a bushing.

ATF 4+ is just fine!! I have been running it for over a year with no ill effects!! There is alot of scietific speculation plastered all over this site! Many users will tell ya to stick to DEXIII because that is what the owners manual says to use BUT ATF 4+ is a better product!

LOLZ.......... guess they just make 2 different fluids for nothing??? And they even put a little DII on the drain plug just for grins?? Have fun with your ATF4+ :twak:

In defense of the guys runnning atf+4, It was designed with the idea of replacing Dex3. It is supposed to supercede it in function, in some trannys it just doesent work the same.

and good luck finding dex2, I am assuming that since that stuff has not been out since fluid came in metal cans you dont change it and use dex3? We are all going to have a fun time in about 5 years, most of the major retailers are shifting away from dex3 and going to the "cover-all" synthetics. Advance and the Zone used to carry 2 or three shelves of regular dex, but now most of what they carry is mercon 5 or Atf 4.

I am switching to a manual tranny anyway.

OP, I have a 4.7 stroker on the origional AW4 with 250k on it, runs great, but I didn't ever have any issues like you did before my build either.

Just to clarify Chrysler developed ATF+4 with the notion of getting away from using Dexron as it was costing them licensing fees. It was intended for the new Chrysler-made trannies and never meant to be compatible with Dexron. Of course Chrysler screwed their reputation when the dealers and many independant shops kept putting Dexron in those new trannies and killing them.

Dexron III Mercon is the proper fluid for the AW4 if you want to use something else and it makes you happy use it. Lets keep focus here and limit discussion to pulling engines or TC rebuilds. Fluids can be discussed somewhere else.

Want to rebuild a 242 for me???
I'll rebuild your 242 except it will cost as much as a new one.
