Trac Loc Question

I have a '99 XJ with a trac loc rear diff.(8.25) I pulled the cover off to replace the gasket and noticed there was no "S" spring like I have seen in some pics. What does the spring do, and does it damage anything not having it?

OK-I got it figured out. Maybe this info will help somebody else:

The Trac Loc being rebuilt is out of a Ford. Ford uses the "S" spring shown.
The Jeep 8.25 does not. Wheww......I thought I was missing some parts!
