Well, I was cruising down I-90 this afternoon and loud noises started eminating from the middle/rear of the XJ.:explosion I slowed down and pulled to the side of the road as it sounded like I would definitely need a tow. After stopping I put the jeep in park and started to get out, I thought maybe it was the chain in the transfer case. As soon as I let off the brake the jeep started to roll. I thought Driveline? But there wasn't nearly enough noise for that. I pulled the emergency brake just enough that it would stay still, but roll if I pushed it. I got out and looked underneath. Driveline looked ok. Rolled it about 6 inches forward. The wheels turned fine but the driveline did not. If I tried to put it into gear it didn't seem to want to turn the pinion, not sure though. The rear end is a D35 with 4.88 gears and a Lockright in it. So any ideas what happened? I will probably crack the cover tomorrow to see what's going on inside. It would be great if it was shafts since I have plenty of extras. But I think that is wishful thinking since cruising down the road without any stress.
Thanks in advance for any ideas,
Jeremy
