PREPARATION FOR MEMORIAL DAY

I know for a lot of us the 28th thru the 31st is a big partying and wheeling weekend and, no doubt, we're all looking forward to it.

But this weekend is also set aside to remember all those who gave their lives for this country to protect our freedoms. Without these men and women there wouldn't be any America, land of the free.

I know those of us who have lost friends or family members will feel some pangs of sadness but we will keep our heads held high in honor of all those that have fallen.

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD,
AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
--John Stewart Mill--

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
--George Orwell--

It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
--Father Dennis Edward O'Brian, USMC--
