Berlin, NH Questions

My girlfriend lives about 2 hours south of that area. There's not much up there, it's very scenic, and quite far from any major cities. Some people see those as good things and others see them as bad... I've been getting up to the WMNF fairly often to go hiking lately and the more time i spend up there the more i like it. The guy who bought my old axles lives in Berlin. He's on here as Bstd_02_Wgn and I'm drawing a blank on his name. He would know more about different places to wheel as he is not only local but also a member of a NEA club. The NEA is a New England organization of clubs that is pretty much in charge of all of the good spots to wheel. I'm sure that there are a ton of locals-only spots to go up there, though. Good luck.

berlin...the state pen is there and theres a pretty decent drug problem. but if you know the places to avoid its not a bad place. ive been there a few times i live about 1 hr south. i wouldnt hesitate to move there. lots of good stuff to do close by. usually some pretty good snowmobiling in the winter. all class 6 roads in NH are legal to ride on. just check with a road agent before you go cuz rules change and so does mud season.

I love NH

His name is Ian iirc, bought a d30 off him.

I'd love to live up there but find employment first. Seems like it might be harder to find a job out in the woods.

The new federal prison is almost complete and should start hiring around October or November. 60% of the staff will come from the local area and the rest will transfer in from other prisons. I'm looking into the area and seeing if I want to transfer there from Colorado.

yes, his name is Ian. thanks Ken. maybe i'll commit that to memory one of these days.

I too would love to live up there. unfortunately, engineering jobs are essentially nonexistent up there.

New Hampshire is the greatest place that I have ever lived! I moved in August of 2005 as an escapee of Rochester NY and have never looked back.

PROS:
-No income tax
-No sales tax
-No seat belt laws
-Very gun friendly
-No motorcycle helmet laws
-No mandatory vehicle insurance
-Low unemployment
-Easy to start a business
-Anywhere you go you are just a few hours from the ocean and the mountains
-People are nice / air is fresh / water is clean

CONS
-Some say higher property taxes than other states
-Lots of people seem to commute to Boston for work (traffic on I-93 sucks)
-Funny accents (I'm kidding!)

To me this was a no-brainer. I travel frequently for work, sometimes for months at a time, and each time I come back to NH my appreciation for that State grows!

LIVE FREE OR DIE!

Yeah NH is pretty cool. We pretty much don't care what happens until someone gets hurt or is in danger of getting hurt. It's still a fast paced New England state but not like Mass is. If you can find a house near that prison I would deff suggest coming to this fine state.

1. that's not a pro. helmet laws are important.
2. that's not a pro - if you get hit by someone without insurance or you have no insurance and you get hurt, you're screwed
3. they are higher

other than that, you've got it right.

if your dumb enough not to wear a helmet or seatbelt then you should die

a valid point that i have no argument against. in fact, i agree.

Yeah, I tend to view it as reinstating darwinism.

If I could only find a tech job out in the boonies...

Basically, it comes down to the fact that the government shouldn't mandate that you have to wear a seatbelt or a helmet. Those decisions should be mandated by common sense.

If not having car insurance was such a big deal, I'm pretty sure that there would be a significant public outcry and that we'd have the mandate.

And, while property taxes may be higher, the overall tax burden is significantly lower than in socialist states, like MA :spin1:

Our property taxes are still cheaper than what we paid in NJ. And in NJ we still had to pay income and sales tax...

damn... i guess for other New England states, NH is higher than most towns in MA and RI.

yet another reason never to move to Jersey...

Berlin is a great place, been here for around 3 years and have loved every minute. If your a city person, Conway is the closest place to city life and thats about 45 minutes away. There are a couple bars, but since the mill has closed alot of the population has disappeared. There is a ton of hiking and exploring to do, and the local 4wd club is growing by the minute
(NWOR, North Woods Off Road, you can find them on Myspace and I think Facebook too) and they have a couple spots on Private land to wheel that are cool. Bethel Maine is about 45 minutes away and they have some primo NE wheeling to be run, and the Jeep Jamboree comes every year. The NWOR members are working to get some land opened up in Jerico State Park which is right on the outskirts of Berlin, but that may not happen for another couple years.

As for the winters, they are really nothing horrible. It snows here in October and accumlations start to build around the end of November, early December. The past couple winter have been nothing great, but its not uncommon to have a couple feet of snow on the ground by mid january. the snowmobiling is phenominal from here north, and the town becomes over run during the season with riders. There is skiing nearby and sunday river is right around the corner.

The best part about Berlin is the rent prices. I am paying next to nothing for what would cost me around $1200 anywhere else. There are a few slum lords around to watch for, but you'll know when you pull up and see them driving a van, drinking beer and sporting a Class A mullet.

Overall its not a bad spot and the economy around here seems to be picking up. We have a tractor supply and Walmart to keep you entertained during the spare time! And the Prison sits on some beautiful land so you'll enjoy the view while keeping the peace.

I don't think the winters are so bad in New Hampshire... but maybe that's because I'm originally from Buffalo / Rochester NY :dunce:

I will be heading up Rt 91 to Lisbon on Saturday. Watch for my green 97 XJ towing a pop-up. Visiting for a few days in the WMNF area, then to Stoughton, Ma. on Thursday & Friday.. Anyone know of any traffic restrictions due to the Clinton picnic in NY state?
