ok, so i'm replacing the motor in my jeep. when i took the radiator out there were two a/c lines that have some sort of flared fitting connection with a retainer clip on them. i took the clip off now do i need a special tool to get them appart or am i doing something wrong. please help thanks

Depends on what year, there is a tool to unlock some of the newer ones.
 
You've (properly) discharged the system, yes? If not, be prepared for a whole bunch of refrigerant/oil coming at you....at about 200 psi.
Be careful.
