I have a 1997 8.25 axle 3.55 grears is making a good deal of noise when it was in the wife's XJ. Have not pulled the cover, I just needed the jeep running so picked up another axle for her Jeep. Does not seem to have extra play in bearings, so think it is something in the ring and pinon or spider gear. I just need it gone. First person to come get it out of my garage can have it (free). No brakes, had to use on new axle.
